Let the Ricers be; that's a totally different niche—I get respect from Ricers; Camaro owners are the ones I despise
I dont despise any cars at all, but the whole "nemisis" title certainly goes to the Camaro. We as Mustang owners miss are American cousins for compition. The only thing I have found the foreign cars good for is a lite dusting of whoop-****, not to say the don't make fast "ricers", but I haven't found any round here...

Given this discussion, I wonder how some of you feel about the Lotus Elise? 4 cylinder engine, low torque, low HP, very lightweight, very fast, handles phenomenally well and putting out near exotic sports car numbers.
Tom-- Have a pic laying (lying?) around?

That thing looks tiny! Still, bet it would go through a clover-leaf at about mach 3.

Good looking car!

The thing is that the Elise weighs less than 2000 LBS...when it's that light and combined with a small displacement engine, it will move. It's sort of like a sportbike with 4 wheels. About the RX8 and S2000...it's light and nimble, but there is no reason why a car should be driven near redline most of the time. It sure will shorten the life of all of your mechanical parts. It's all about the torque on cars. My opinion about Honda is that it should stick to making things on 2 wheels. If you want a small engine, get a well designed one like VW's 1.8T that produces 173 lb-ft @ 1950rpms. Call me ignorant

I saw one in Miami a couple of weeks ago at an Exotic car dealer. It is slightly bigger than a Miata. This is one car that looks more impressive in pics than live. Performance wise it might be great, I don't know enough about the car. But at that price range, the Corvette coupe looks very appealing.

The base model Elise has more like 120hp ... you have to pay alot for that 190hp

We have someone in Pensacola that's driving around in an Exige (which is a *****-to-the-wall racing coupe version of the Elise), and I can attest that it flat-out moves. Watched him wax a Viper (first gen) off the line, I mean not even close.

I think the Elise is a cool concept, but it isn't designed to my scale. Something tells me that 6'3" and 220+ isn't going to shoehorn into that driver's seat. I bet one of my size 13s would work all three pedals at once. :P

Two words,

"Chick car" Im like Blake, my size 13 Lugs would brake shift and gas all at the same time. Does that thing remind anyone else of the car Travolta drove in Swordfish? (front end)

in reponse to two earlier posts. yes, the S2000 will have longevity issues if you continually drive it at redline. at those rpm's the S2000's piston speeds are greater than those in Ferrari's F1 racer. it is not that difficult for us "bigger" guys to find a sports car to fit us. we've got mustangs, corvettes. vipers, etc...

In swordfish that was a TVR. I think a Tuscan.

and the onlys one of those cars that pushrod power listed that is reasonably priced is the mustang.

I like the Elise, in fact I considered buying one (if I could find one that didn't have the price jacked up), but the thing is, I think it is ugly, and also I need a practical daily driver.

Anyway, Tom, I think it's funny that you say your S2000 would whip a Mustang in autocross, yet you fully admit that autocross comes down to the driver's abilities. So, you must be saying that you are a better driver than all of us.

Personally, I like muscle, and muscle means down-low torque.

If I want to wind the revs up, I'll jump on my V-max and kick her up to 10,000 RPM and 150HP.

Anyway, saying that 1/4 mile isn't real racing is bullpoo. 1/4 mile racing is what spurred America to wake up to fast cars, and the Mustang was one of the founding members of that movement.

If you don't like dragging, that is understandable, but don't say it isn't real racing.

Lastly, you said that more displacement isn't always better...here's my answer, and please bear in mind that I've worked on cars for over 10 years:

If you care about your engine's reliability, then more displacement is always better. Sure, F1 cars have small engines, but they also have to rebuild them after every race. Anytime you try to get high performance out of small engines, you have to raise the compression ratio (for instance, the 05 Mustang is 9.8:1, and your S2000 is 11.1:1. That means shorter life for the engine. Also, if you try to add any sort of forced induction, your engine is already pretty tightly wound, and you don't have much room to play before you start breaking things.

Hey, to each his own though. I think the S2000s and Miatas and Coopers are little girl's cars, but that is just my opinion.

all elise's come with the same engine. the only options are trims levels. like sport suspension, hard top, and like leather seats. i saw one in real life. it looks a little wierd. i wish the mustang weighed 1900 Lbs imgine that car with 300Hp and 320 torque!!!!!!!!! and there is nothing wrong with imports. the wrong people(ricers) can make any car look like crap. ive had my but handed to me by a coulpe crx's. yeah they had turbo's............ all that matters is the numbers, so who cares what engine get them there. shame i still havent heard a 4 that had a growl like a v8 though!
