WD-40? Gotta try that.
I got it clean but only used a high pressurse hose at a coin wash bay. After letting them soak and knocking off the big stuff used a terry cloth towel and elbow grease.
Looks great. The high pressure wash is a big help.
I have found a product called goof-off that is an excellent tar remover. It is basically the old school Turtle Wax tar remover that they took off the market. The new Turtle Wax bug and tar product is about as effective as spit.

dunno about a car, but on my motorcycle i use this "spray wax polish" to remove the bugs that don't come off withthe normal wash/scrub - it does a good job, and is MEANT as a detailing paint.
Motul makes some (i use this) - Honda used to make some as well, but stopped a little ago. Drop by your local bike shop, they should have the Motul spray polish on hand - just spray it on and wipe them off (ok, might require a little rub to remove the bugs!). Looks like this:

if all else fails, clay bar is your friend (just don't forget to add some wax back on!)
cheers,
k

I went through a swarm of dragonflies the other day traveling across a long flat bridge. It lasted about 10-15 miles of this 25 mile bridge. I had just washed it too. I tried to dodge them as best I could, but needless to say by the time I got to my destination the front of my car was a mess.

AWW dragonflies are the worst. they're so huge that they get stuck in the cracks on the front bumpers and you end up having to pull them out. gross...

I guess here in the South if duck tape doesnt fix it then WD-40 will.

This is seriously the best tar remover I've ever used. The tar simply wipes off and the paint isn't damaged.
This smells like old fashioned solvent. Turtle wax bug and tar remover used to smell just like this. Turtle wax went with some politically correct formula that won't hurt a spotted owl, condor, or desert tortoise (although I think they all taste about the same) and it doesn't work.
This stuff is great. I think Wal Mart carries it.

One thing I forgot to add.
In addition to the WD-40, have your wife or girlfriend or you gals get some of these feminine shower scrubbies. The gals here will know what I am talking about. Do not get the ones in the kitchen section for pots and pans, get the ones in the bath or cosmetic section. They work great and will not harm the finish in any way whatsoever. I use them on the front of the car, windshield, front of mirrors, etc.
I have been using WD-40 for 20 years or better.
I used to buy the turtle wax bug and tar remover that had the good smell to it to get the heavy tar spots off. It did work great. I still have about 1/3 of a bottle left.
I use it on special occasions.
