2005 GT Tach Needle Not Registering Correctly

Hello! First time post and new member.

I bought a 2005 GT a week ago for my son's birthday and today he told me that the tach needle was messed up. I went out looked and sure enough the needle is on the 8000 RPM spot. When you start it, it revs fine but its starting point it 8000rmp instead of at the idle position (8 or 900rpm)...anyone have a clue what the problem is?

Again, it doesn't affect the drivability, but the tach is basically useless as it is reading incorrectly.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Jeff

The most common thing to check first is to see if the needle has been pulled off and reinstalled in the incorrect position. You have to remove the dash trim that surrounds the instrument cluster, then remove the clear plastic lens assembly from the cluster housing and carefully pull the needle off it's pivot and reinstall it so that it reads zero resting on the pin when the engine is off but the key in the run position.

Let me know if this works for you.
