You have to remeber though, the 98 4.6 2 valves were only putting out 225 hp compared to the 99's which were putting out 260 hp
Yep, in stock form the 96-98 gts were pretty lacking in the power department. That combined with the lack of low end torque made them a pretty boring ride in factory form. However, it is the lack of torque and heavier weight that gives them that "slow" feeling, because the 5.0s were only rated at 225 hp as well.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that 98 GT is boring, because it handles a lot better than the Fox body 5.0s (see my signature, I definitely know from experience).

However, I will agree that the 98 GT is lacking in power, but if you keep the RPMs up there, it can be a fun car to drive as well.

Still can't wait to get my 05 though...

I agree totally on the handling thing. That is the exact reason I chose to build a sn95 for my race car. The chassis as a whole seems to be much more together, and they seem to handle much more confidently on the road, in stock form that is.

To me the 96 - 98 stangs are boring to drive in stock form, comparatively speaking that is. They are still better than driving a honda or some other completely torqueless vehicle.

I just rod in a car that put my dad's 5.0 to shame. My cousin who we bought the 93 LX from bought an 89 coupe that that a turbocharged 302 bored .030 over. That was unbelievable!!!! Id had never ridden in a turbo car and sheww. That thing took off when he tromped it and at only half throttle the rear broke loose. My brother said he was doing about 85 moh in about 2-3 seconds!!! That was just and unreal ride!!!

I used to own a 5.0 LX in highschool. That was a fun car. But it doesn't compare to the acceleration and handling of the S197 4.6L.

Dito!!!!! But i do miss my 5.0. But This car is 1.3 seconds quicker in the 8th mile stock vs. my 5.0 when it was modded. But it was also an Automatic.

The exhaust sound alone coming out of a 5.0 is reason enough to like it over the 4.6's
i dont know, my 50 is loud but thats b/c i dont have a stock exhaust on my car. but my wifes 04gt sounds pretty darn good. not as deep as the 50, but sounds more exotic. multicams have a cool sound

Bingo. I really like the 4.6 exhaust sound. A little higher pitched but more muscular to me. Just my .02.

I can only imagine what the 3 valve 281's are like.
They're fantastic! I went from an 89 5.0 LX coupe to my 05 GT and while it's true that the 5.0 feels torquier (I think it's more because the car is 400lbs lighter than the 05), the 3v 4.6 really makes power high up in the rev range. What I'd like to try is an 03 Mach 1 with the 4v 4.6!

Now the 07 cobras, I firmly believe they will be a true driving expieriance. With the better handling of the 05 chassis and suspension combined with improved low end torque and more power compared to the 03's, I am sure they will be nothing short of amazing to drive.

I don't know. I'm going to have to say that I think the 5.0 sounds more muscular to me. It's definately a deeper, more throaty tone. Where the 4.6 is more raspy, but still sounds good.

I've owned both. I've had a 2000 GT, and my recent 1995 GT. They both are still the best sounding muscle car on the road though nevertheless.

You guys that havnt driven the new GT really need to try it. Just got mine last week after ordering it Feb. 3. In 2002, I test drove the GT, and I was not to impressed with it. I ended up getting a 97 TransAm WS6. The TA needed some work on leaky engine seals, so I went and checked out the new Mustang, and after the test drive I was hooked on it. It felt as fast as the TA, and handles much better than the previous Mustangs. The salesman told me to open it up on the test drive, and I had it up to 130mph in fourth gear. I ordered it the same day. All options except leather seats and 1000 watt stereo. After market stripes, hood scoop, and quarter panel louvers. Will post some pictures when I get around to it. In my opinion. you cant go wrong with this car for the price, I dont even miss my TA.

If I had the money I would have me one of those. That will probably be a "one of these days"cars. I cant even afford a Honda right now. At least I have my dad's (which will be mine in a few years).

In '97 I purchased a brand new GT Vert black on black. Car looked awesome. After having it a few weeks I was thinking "this car is going to need some roids or something, it's just not that fast". Not too long after that I was almost dusted by one of the new Nissan Maximas with the thing. Once that happened, I was like "hmm...must have faster car". I decided not to mod the GT, but to get a '97 Cobra vert. That car ran real well. I put 3.73s in it, new clutch/trans and a shifter. No more threats from just about anything at the time, especially Maximas. I feel that the '05 runs as well as the '97 Cobra, and I had 3.73s in that car. 3.73s, an intake and a few other goodies and the '05 is pretty unbeatable.

Nothing taken away from the 5.0s though. I had a couple and loved them, especially my '86GT. That was one bad car at the time. The only threats at the time were the Corvette and the Buick. Other than that, the GT was king.
