Isn't it about time you wrap it up?

So, you've waited until the last minute again. That doesn't mean your gift has to look like it.

If the gift is in a rectangular box or you have one to put it in and it's smaller than your wrapping paper, it should be a simple task. Even a man can do it.

First, if you have pets, put them in another room and close the door. They like to "help," particularly puppies and most cats of all ages. You don't want to have a perfectly wrapped gift that meows or have to chase the puppy all over the house to get the tape. You may want to do the same thing with toddlers unless you're the one who's supposed to be tending them. If that's the case, wait until they're asleep.

After you've taken care of your "helpers," gather the box to be wrapped, gift-wrapping paper, scissors, tape, nametag or card and stick-on bow.

If the gift is something that you have to put inside a box to wrap, you'll also need tissue.

Let's get started

Take the materials to a flat surface, preferably a kitchen or dining room table.

If using tissue -- any color is fine, but white is preferable for clothing that is not inside a plastic wrapper, in case the tissue isn't colorfast and happens to get wet -- center the tissue in the bottom of the box so that equal length sides of it can be folded over the gift.

1. After closing the box, place it on top of the wrapping paper and measure, making sure that the edges will meet in the center lengthwise, with about 2 inches overlap. The paper should be wide enough so that each edge meets the bottom of the box. Now cut the paper to the correct size. You can mark it with a ruler so you get a straight line.

2. Return the box to the center of the gift wrap, fold over one side lengthwise and tape it to the box.

3. Bring the other side of the paper toward the center of the box, overlapping the edge, and tape to the paper.

4. Turn the package so one of the sides faces away from you. Fold each of the sides facing you toward the side center of the box, creasing the top and bottom edges of the paper. Fold the bottom edge into a triangle and fold up. Tape it to the box if it is easier.

5. Now fold the top edge into a triangle and fold down, taping the point to the paper.

6. Repeat for the other side.

7. Affix a self-adhesive bow atop the package, fill out the nametag or card and tape it to the package.

Not satisfied? Grab a gift bag

If your gift is an irregular size and won't fit in a standard box, turn to the gift bag. They're quite attractive and come in all sizes. Here, you should try to match the tissue to the bag. Place the gift in the bag making sure the bag is taller than the gift, then take several pieces of tissue, pull from the center into a point, then stuff the bag and fluff out the tissue. Fill out the nametag on the bag handle and viola! You're ready to play Santa.

My sister and I would get in wrapping wars. Our goal was to wrap it soooo tight the you needed a cutting device to open it. One time I used threaded FSK tape instead of wrapping paper.

I won that year. It took while to get that one opened.

For those who don't know Threaded FSK tape is a shiny silver and has threads (like packing tape). It is hard to tear (is you can do it at all because of the threads). After it touches something, it ain't coming off. It is used to tape the insulation on ductwork.

 

Please send me that paper so I can use it to wrap my gifts

 

My sisster is one of those nuts who save paper, so she carefully opens it by peeling up the tape. Got her back several years ago by wrapping a present with 25 layers of paper. She gave up about 5 and started tearing. It had so much paper, it started to look round.

My husband wraps my presents in Tin Foil- Kid you not..He never goes to the closet for the real stuff.

You might be a redneck if you wrap your presents in aluminum foil....
