1 million bucks eh, I'd first sell our house to upgrade to something roomier, especially for some new cars.

No, why would I be? Add Impreza Sti engine in Yugo and you'll get 10-sec car for sure. In Car and Driver there was Yugo called Corvette Killer because it was faster than Corvette Z06, so that Yugo had better time than 12.2 sec. So I don't see why making 8-sec-Yugo would be a problem (of course if you have $$$).
