Yeah its all high desert/desert. But Sac Valley/Central Valley I-5 is all sucksville.
2 weeks isn't much time...

It's been a long time since i drove the coast to California but you are right it can be a real snoozer. I'm considering all options including flying to vegas and renting a car from there.

We drove 395 north from Barstow on the way back from Texas last Christmas and really enjoyed it. But then, anything is better than I5 unless you are in a hurry.
