I wondered if you were going to drone I-5. 
I was going to suggest 395 down along Abert Rim. Hot springs. Further down thru CA on the east side of the Sierra's. With a side over Tioga Pass into Yosemite. Really awesome!
Yeah its all high desert/desert. But Sac Valley/Central Valley I-5 is all sucksville.
2 weeks isn't much time...

It's been a long time since i drove the coast to California but you are right it can be a real snoozer. I'm considering all options including flying to vegas and renting a car from there.
