Sally Ride, the first U.S. woman to travel into space and an advocate for science education, died on Monday after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, according to her organization, Sally Ride Science. She was 61.
Ride broke new ground for American women in 1983 when at the age of 32 she and four male crewmates blasted off aboard space shuttle Challenger.

Charlie.. cases of pancreatic cancer seems to be on the rise lately... my neighbor passed away from it January 2011, and a firefighter I know was diagnosed with it a mere 3 months after he retired.

Eating more foods that contain the antioxidant vitamins C, E, and the trace mineral selenium could slash your risk of developing deadly pancreatic cancer by up to two-thirds, says a new study published in the journal Gut.
Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all cancers, killing 95 percent of the almost 43,000 Americans who will be diagnosed this year. A diagnosis of the disease is usually a death sentence, as in the cases of movie star Patrick Swayze and space pioneer Sally Ride, because it typically causes no symptoms until it is advanced and has metastasized to other organs.
Genes, smoking, and Type 2 diabetes are all risk factors, but diet is also thought to have a role, say the authors.

Met a man on Sunday that had an extremely rare form and operating was risky because the tumor was against major blood vessels. They gave him 60 days, slim chance that surgery would be successful. That was 7 years ago! That was a very encouraging success story for me to hear!

My neighbor was a diabetic, my retired firefighter brother is a very healthy man who runs daily, mountain bikes and works out at the gym regularly. He's a fighter and has stated that he is going to fight that bastard known as pancreatic cancer and be part of the 5%. Positive mental attitude is part of the process!

Opps.. type II diabetes is a contributing factor 
I've read that fewer than 20% of the people who contract pancreatic cancer survive past the first year of diagnosis. I genuinely feel sorry for anybody who gets diagnosed with it.
I told a friend that if I ever get diagnosed with something like this one of the last things I think I'll do is pull next to a state tropper, nail it and just run until my car cant run any faster.
(Hmmm... maybe venue change to New Hampshire would be in order - Live Free or Die would be a fitting motto on the license plate)
A few of my dad's friends contracted pancreatic cancer and I swear they didn't make it six months.
