We were talking today.

If this happened off of the East or West coasts of the U.S., would the death toll be that high? Are we prepared for somehing like that?

their wouldnt be as many dead if it happened in the U.S. because
their was almost no way to warn those in danger of the tsunami's in Asia
the earthquakes werent the main cause of the fatalities, it was the tsunamis. some were as fast as 500 mph.
there would be fatalities in the U.S. but not close to the 55,000 now reported fatalities

I heard 67,000 now. And they are saying that they wouldn't be surprised if it ran over 100k. Sad.

It seems like its going to get worse. With all the dead, there is almost certainly going to be disease spreading.

Also, there are some pretty big aftershocks.

they say the disease that will spread will double the fatalities. i hope they can clean up the wreakages before extreme biological damage begins.

their were civil wars in two of the countries hit hardest... one war was put aside so each side could help each other... the other war has not died down. they blame eachother for not reacting quick enough

actually there has been some controversy as to whether the U.S. has sent enough money and help.
imo, i dont think we have done enough... the U.S. usually doesnt help the rest of the world that much anyways, so its no surprise. Out of the world's richest countries the u.s. is last in donating: at 0.14 percent donated of its gross national income.

oh well, i just hope this time the u.s. can counter their "stingyness" and be their to help the casualties from rising
