Lithium Car Battery?

is it possible? it may be a dumb question but just wanted to ask and get opinions. i think itll have its ups and downs like if the battery gave the starter more voltage or amps or w/e, more than it needs to start the engine which i think would be bad for the starter. i asked my teacher like 'has anyone made a lithium powered car battery?' and his reply to me was 'go invent it'. so yeah, what do u guys think? good idea? or stupid idea, question, and thread?

It is an interesting idea, but I question the need for it. Regular batteries need only to provide the energy needed to start the engine. A quick and nasty burst of energy. They really don't need great reserve power, which is what lithium's are great at.

I think a better approach might be an ultra capacitor, that really isn't a battery at all. They can provide massive power very quickly, and can charge from 0-100% in just a few seconds. They also don't really ever wear out, so that's a plus. Do some research on them...start with the 5.11 Light For Life http://www.511tactical.com/html511/static/LFLDemo.html
Imagine that scaled up for a car battery....

If the cost/life is better, unlikely. On an average car its not needed.
Maybe on special applications, or an alternative to deep cycle batteries. Sound maniacs, etc. For most cars on the road its not needed, our battery cost to life ratio is pretty good.
Lithuim car batteries would be expensive!

The Volt will be the first hybrid to use the lithium batteries, other than the limited production and ultra expensive Tesla Roadster. All other current hybrids use NiMh batteries. The lithiums are just too expensive and produce too much heat. Not that it can't be done, but there are plenty of obstacles to overcome. That is why the NiMh batteries were so attractive to auto makers....less involved in making a big battery.

+1. Just like those laptop battery fires (quite expensive to replace) and the ones in certain MP3 players you may have heard about.
