Hmmm, interesting. I wonder what he's actually hoping to find...

In other news...I'm looking to buy a new laptop. Specifically, I'm currently looking at this: Acer Aspire One AO756-2641 It's on sale for $280 right now. Thoughts? Anyone familiar with Acer laptops?

What's the laptops' purpose? There are phones out now better specs than that thing.

If you don't absolutely need to be portable, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboB...=Combo.1219642 is a great deal.

Haha. Yeah, I realize it's not the fanciest laptop. And that is a pretty good deal for a desktop, but it *MUST* be portable. My current laptop is a 17in. and while I love the screen size, it's less than ideal for carrying around. As a classmate put it (7 years ago even when it was still new) as I was pulling my laptop out of my backpack: "****, I thought you were pulling the 10 commandments out of there." It's 17in. and probably around 3in. thick, so I'm looking for a laptop replacement in a smaller form.

Ideally I want a Windows 8 tablet (with a keyboard case), but I'm still not happy with the prices yet. The mentioned netbook has decent expandability. I'll put 8GB of RAM in it and a SSD, but my concern is the CPU and the feel of the laptop itself. The CPU benchmarks a little lower than the one I have in my current laptop, although the RAM and SSD will be a huge improvement.

I won't be doing anything really intensive on it and I don't game on my computers. I'll mostly be using it for class work, programming, throwing around, etc. I'm open to suggestions also...

My Acer lcd monitor still working great since 2005 fwiw.

Almost bought an Acer desktop that a customer didn't like and returned within 15 days but the store wouldn't back the factory warranty.

The video card on the acer desktop we bought several years ago went out in just a few months. Wouldn't buy another one. It just felt very cheap. They may have improved since then though.

Yeah I would defiantly look for one with a better cpu, for dual core I'd get a i3 at the bare minimum. Yes the one your looking at/amd is the cheaper route but you'll have to upgrade them much sooner. As with most things, you get what you pay for. Dual core @ 1.1 ghz is a joke lol.

I admit that isn't exactly a powerhouse, but at least it has a decent screen and keyboard, which phones don't. I use an Asus 1215N that just recently replaced my Asus 1005PR and both of them handle everything I ever need to do. My Android phone has an app that will work with Office files, but even trying to read a spreadsheet on a phone screen is ridiculous.

My brother bought an Acer at that price point about two years ago. It no longer functions. I can't speak for their newer offerings, but maybe google reviews of that particular model.

Last computer I bought was an Asus off the shelf at Best Buy and its been serving me well for the last 4 years or so. Dunno about their smaller computers, but I also have their Nexus tablet and I have to say, so far the hardware has all been pretty durable and reliable.

We have an Acer Aspire home theater PC that has been just fine. Of course, it never moves. I've had four Asus computers, starting with their first 7" netbook, and have carted them all over the world. I sold the 7 (a Unix machine) and bought a 9" that ran XP, then sold that and bought a 10" with Windows 7 and a good sized hard drive. When the wireless adapter started dropping signal I bought my current 12". They are well build and solid and have enough power for me to maintain web sites, edit newsletters, etc. They are slim and light and easy to cart around. I need to sell my 10" but haven't gotten around to it. A USB wireless adapter would solve its only problem.

Maybe they've improved since my last use of them (or we got a dud, who knows)

My brother and I are fairly rough on our technology (clumsy SOBs ) so durability has been my primary concern these days

phishing scams. they were in an exchange server, so pulled out all sorts of emails, looking for info (passwords, logins, etc etc) and probably also using said exchange server to spam the hell out of some crap that goes out to other people in distribution list and address books.

An i3 is above the max I'm looking for, both in price and performance. Honestly, I feel like processors have gone above anything the average user will ever need. This is just gonna be a travel and throw around computer. I tend to spend a lot of money on stuff, and take very good care of it...But it does get exhausting taking good care of everything. I want to be able to drop it off a table and not give a ****...Well I'll still be upset, but not as much as if I dropped a $2K laptop.

I realize it'll need to be updated soon, which is why I already made sure the RAM can hold more than 2GB. Even still, I fully expect this to be a "disposable" laptop. At the very least, it'll make a good thin client later on.

IMO, Acer was/is the Sparkomatic of computers. Usable, but cheap and cheaply made.
Get yourself a used HP Pavilion. Should be able to find a decent dual-core with 4GB of RAM and a 320GB HD, Blueray and so forth for about $300. Hell I paid $400 for mine new and it is a 17" desktop replacement.
