The only actions any politician is realistically going to be able take to seriously change gas prices is to open up drilling in ANWR.....and that is assuming you are on the side of the equation that believes oil reserves under ANWR are significant enough to have an impact......and/or change US policy and allow Iran to purchase the deep drilling equipment they require to tap into their significant reserves. Even so, both strategies would take several years to make a significant impact on fuel prices. Out of the three remaining Presidential candidates you have one who might consider opening up drilling in ANWR....it's difficult to say what might or might not happen with Iran.

Outside of this it is simple supply and demand, and right now there is a lot more of the latter globally than the former due to a shortage of refineries which is the limiting factor for the above moves a President could make. Right now you are paying four dollars a gallon for gas because, collectively, we are willing to do so and because there is no great excess production of gasoline which the oil companies need to lower prices to rid themselves of. Sooner or later some company will bring more refineries online which will ultimately be what brings prices back down, but just like opening ANWR this is going to take time and unlike ANWR no politician, including the President, is going to have much to say about.
