Volvo V40

Too bad we're not gonna get this car.

Ford's 1.6L EcoBoosts (150 hp and 180 hp) and Volvo's own 2.5L turbo I5 252 hp. As well as two 2.0L diesels (150 hp and 170 hp).

I don't think it has been officially announced that the US isn't getting the new V40 . . . And I bet we do get it! Volvo can't afford not to offer a new model in the USA . . . even if they aren't anticipating many sales (90,000 Annually with ~75,000 for Europe.)

Ditto, and don't forget CAFE requirements, Volvo will need a smaller fuel sipper somewhere in their lineup.

As for the V40, mixed. I like the concept, 5-door hatchback but I think it's getting a bit overstyled, especially towards the back. Just too much going on, too many elements that aren't completely well integrated. The best angle, interestingly, is the view from above -- pilots will love this car!

I think Volvo, like BMW has, is needlessly trying to get away from a very clean design language that has served them very well and overdoing it in the process with gratuitously overstyled cars. Like Bangle at BMW, one gets the feeling that a new designer took the reins and, being the new designer in the house, felt compelled to make his mark, throwing the baby (previous excellent design language) out with the bathwater. I think the past two generations of Volvos have been extraordinarily handsome and well executed designs perfectly suited for its image.

This is the first modern Volvo that I would actually spend the money on.
