Volkswagen Up

http://www.autoblog.com/2012/10/08/2...gen-up-review/

Despite the fact that the Smart ForTwo has pretty much been a flop here in the United States (and understandably so), we Americans are slowly but surely warming up to intelligent little city cars. The Fiat 500, which got off to a slow start, is gaining traction; Scion is now pushing its miniscule iQ in all markets, and General Motorshas just opened the gates on the Chevrolet Spark. But until widespread success in this segment is firmly on record, it's no secret that automakers are hesitant to bring over their smallest offerings. It's one thing to import hundred-thousand-dollar supercars, but when you're trying to compete with a low-price-point product, additional import costs only hurt the business case.

Elsewhere 'round the globe, Volkswagen is enjoying early success with its Up minicar, the tiny runabout that was names 2012 World Car of the Year during the New York Auto Show And since VW brought an Up! to the States in order to proudly take the stage during that Big Apple award ceremony, the automaker sent its worldly winner on a tour-de-America. We grabbed the keys for a few days during its stay in the Motor City.

Too bad this car is not available with a diesel engine.

Volkswagen used to have a similar sized car, a 1998-2005 Lupo.
Because of a very small 1.2L I3 diesel engine, Lupo was rated at 94 mpg.

A perfect car for city driving.

I like the new Up! This is a true definition of a basic uncomplicated modern People's Car evolved to be roomy and completely functional. It looks quality too.

Kind of reminds me of the Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed Gen I Golf/Rabbit, or even Polo, in being a clean, modern, coherent yet not boring design of an economy car. It embraces its well-conceived efficiency, not sort of rubbing your nose in some hairshirt econo-penalty box as so many economy designs do.

My dad had one of those, an fuel injected but bone-stock-base '77 model, IIRC, even though he could readily have afforded a Mercedes if he wanted. He thought it the better car. It was just a revelation of clean, modern and efficient industrial design coming from the Baroque barges that epitomized Detroit designs of the time.

An Up! GTi with a perky 100hp, an extra cog in the tranny and suitably uprated suspension would be interesting.
