VIN Number under windshield

Have you guys taken to covering up your VIN numbers under your windshield? May be a good idea since a lot of mischief can be done to your car by somebody who has copied down your VIN number.

It has been known that some people will take your Vin number and somehow manage to convince someone at Ford that you lost your keys. Then provide them with Vin number, license plate (and for the ones smart enough, or should I say dumb enough to follow you home) home address, phone number and name. Ford then gets them a set of replacement keys.

Now I have not seen this happen (especially with Ford) but aparently this has been happening for years now.

Most Ford dealers will not cut you two new keys unless you show proof of ownership, such as registration papers, and a valid driver's liscence that matches those documents. Even then, they will more than likely ask that you have the car towed there and have the service department clear out the computer's memory of the other keys and program the new ones. Dealers also will not cut keys for re-po companies since some of those businesses are just a cover for illegal activity. Ford has put out communications to its dealers to check a person's identity when they ask for new keys due to losing them.
