Actually Toyota passed Ford as the #2 automaker in 2003 and they're closing in on GM this year:

I guess I don't see the point. They've been outselling Ford since '03. Why is it so discouraging now?

Really? I just read article for the 2nd time and I can't find that part. Could you copy/paste it?

Article said that Toyota took #2 position worldwide, not in the USA.

That article doesn't specifically mention US sales, but this article from December '03 does:

The Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord have monopolized the top-selling car spot since 1997 and Toyota passed Ford this year to gain the lead in US car sales.
BTW, I was referring to article that 97svtgoin05gt posted, not mine. His article was about US sales.

OK, I think I see now. They story I posted referred to Toyota passing Ford in US car sales but not in total sales. I had remembered seeing a mention of US sales back in 2003 when I was reading articles about Toyota passing Ford in global sales. Unfortunately, my memory wasn't good enough to remember that was only cars.

Now Yahoo today is reporting that Ford is looking at possible alliances with GM and the potential sale of Jaguar.

Here it is:

Actually, it doesn't say they're seeking an alliance with GM. It says they are seeking with other automakers, which is something GM is also considering.

1. They don't say an alliance with GM, they say they're looking at alliances with other makers, "a move that General Motors Corp. is considering."

2. They don't say "they're thinking about selling Jaguar and allying with [insert company here]." They say Ford is hiring analysts to review the situation and tell them what they should do, which could include selling off low-selling brands or alliances.
