Shelby GR-1 Concept Unveiled
is it just me, or does it remind anyone else of the detomaso pantera. im pretty sure there is some strong resemblence between the gr-1 and the pantera. it might have been another 70s or maybe even 80s 'exotic' car.
Did anyone actually see this car in person? All the photographs I've seen are the same and I want to see a better picture from the rear of the car. Looks like Stock Ford Media photos to me, and considering this car is only a rolling chassis, it wouldn't suprise me if the car didn't even make the event to keep it under tight wraps.
I like the GR-1, but is there a market for it (the vette and viper are established and cater to different ends of the spectrum)
Personally I think the vette has this segement wrapped up, the formula is perfect and it has a history to back it up, the viper on the other hand is doomed to an F-body demise.
However if Ford actually comptemplated building this car, this is how'd I do it.
build a super stiff unit body made from aluminum ala' Audi and Acura, utilize cast aluminum front and rear sub-frames that would isolate the driveline and contribute toward stiffness. aluminum 5.7 4v V10, M6 or A6 transaxle, ABS and TC (no silly big bertha AWD), well appointed interior using analog gauges, really good seats (fully articulated units that hold you in and are adjustable from skinnny mini to fat boy) aluminum frames of course, adjustable steering and peddles,
some other things,
Magnesium wheels and no runflats, a proper sized donut will do. Engine would need to produce 450 to 475 HP, also engine bay has to be nice and very clean, engine needs to be part of the styling as well) and vehicle weight would need to be in the 3200 to 3500 lbs range. Keep unsprung weight low as possible (aluminum upright, remote reservior shocks, composite brakes (not carbon/carbon, but alumium/steel rotors, aluminum calipers)
None of this is to terribly exotic, just topline mass production techniques, people really like very good actual GT cars, not actual sports cars and very few people give a whit beyond what they can brag about in magazine tests and articles.
Oh yeah almost forgot, needs to be priced between a vet and viper, and the chassis should be good enough to be spread across PAG.
