the point is that they stick those in everything. RX7's 240sx's fox bodies. they don't know where to stop. When have you heard a Mod being installed in a old camaro?

In Chevy's defense, they did build a great engine that's cheap to get power out of, easy to find, and cheap to buy. While I agree it's getting monotonous, you can't fault chevy for the success of their engines.

Y'know, with that aluminum block, it shouldn't change the weight balance, overall... probably be a fun car to play with....

Go look up MGBs with Buick/Rover 3.5L V8s in them. They're aluminum, so they don't bog the car down (esp. when taking out that huge tractor 4 banger or the 6), only 40Lbs more...

The ls1 swap is very popular due to the fact its not as costly as some import swaps would be, such as a rb26 or a 2jzgte. I'm sure if the 4.6 4v were cheaper that would also be a popular swap since its supercharged. Locally we have a ls1 240 and rx7 running around. They're interesting swaps, and since the ls1 is so easy to get power out of, its no wonder why some people have chosen to go that route.

Funny most of the time it's not the "chevy boys" putting these into everything but rather people who realize a potent compact powerhouse with simple and effective mod potential. A main advantage of the LS design is it's simplicity and compact size great mod potential and fairly cheap (compared to say a mod motor).

Why do you not see a mod motor in an old Camaro? Simple and don't take offense but why? What's the advantage?

Size and weight favor the LS1
HP and TQ (stock) favor the LS1
Mods (especially N/A) are cheaper for the LS1
Asside from a Termi motor ( whic still deals with the size issue) putting an LS1 unless you want to make a statement makes more sense based on those criteria. LS1's fit perfectly in RX-7's whereas you'd probably have to take a sawzall to the fenders and still have to relocate the master cylinder and heater housing etc. It isn't the end all motor by any means but for a swapper or DIY guy its an ideal engine for a hot ride with good power, fuel efficiency and compactness. I've seen that car in this month's car craft. Doesn't seem like a "chevy boy" more than your average car crafter.

Speaking of which, I guess it gets a pass for being a kit car, but oooohhhh mama! LS7 Powered Cobra.

I agree with you Slim, the LS motors are excellent for hot rodding for the reasons you cite and for transplants (with the exception of those Foxbody/LSx mutts )

I've seen one of those around here recently. Shocked the hell out of me to see an LS7 in it. Looked and sounded **** good though.

Aww common you know aside from the obvious brand clashing LSx and fox bodies go together like peas and carrots. And it's easier to put an LS in it than a Termi motor. Hell Car Craft (or Hot Rod whichever) made their bolt on LS1 Fox do 11's .

Unfortunately my Foxbody roots have made me a bit of a snob when it comes to that , besides with all the windsor goodness out there I can't honestly see a reason to bastardize one unless somebody is on a extremely tight budget.

I'm hoping that the new 5.0L Coyote and 3.5L Ecoboost will make sure Ford sees more of this kind of action in the future, particularly since both will be readily available from wrecked F-Series, etc. within the next several years and both make great numbers. Ironically, for obvious reasons the turbo six is going to be both the more compact choice and the easier one to extract more power from, although neither is going to be lacking even in stock trim.

The new 5.0 is still on the big side, but I cold see one in a hotrod with the cam covers peeking out from the sides of the grille. Especially with this under the bonnet

Yep that's what I was about to say. Great power/economy numbers but the packaging will be a merf. It would be awsome to see a slew of new 5.0's in old foxes but will they fit without a sawzall? In this area low tech (ie cam in block) has an advantage so bob's gunna have to build his 347 (not that it's a bad thing) much to my chargrin.

You absolutely sure about that Bob? I can get ya a 300+ hp 5.3 complete with harness and accessories for 600 all day long .

A Fox body would swallow an elephant if you wanted it too, any existing Mod motor fits between the fender wells IIRC so the Coyote should be no problem. (height is more often the problem with fox body cars) The real question here is going to be whether the 5.0L will fit into the 60's Mustang without some assistance. The DOHC Mod motors need massaging to fit into a first gen Mustang (71-73 excepted) so this could still be an issue with the Coyote. Then again, but the new 5.0L is supposedly narrower across the cam coversthan the Mod motor was, so it may be doable as just a drop in.
