The old Charger
Correct, But my point was that more horsepower alone was not enough to make them more successful than the Mustang with less horsepower. The Mustang has a good balance between engine power, handling, styling, interior room, trunk space, and price to make it successful, even if it isn't the horsepower king.
And with federal fuel economy regulations tightening in the near future, how many 400+ hp LS and "Hemi" V8 musclecars are the competition going to be able to build?
DCX messed up big time in the looks dept. with that joke they call a Charger. The '08 Challenger - now that's done right (other than the porky weight). If I could, I'd want one in black w/a grill delete.
One more reason for Ford to get its act together. A 300hp 'Stang just doesn't cut it anymore...and I'm not paying 55-grand for a GT500.
Pretty soon there's gonna be so many cars on the street with more than 300hp that the Mustang will be the ultimate joke.
Not to mention that nearly all of the muscle cars that are coming back, come out of the box with more stock hp than ours.

So, what if another manufacturer offers more HP? The Dodge Charger offers more HP with the SRT8 package (425-hp) with a base price of $36,045 (from Edmunds) in a vehicle that weighs in at 4,190-lbs. MT tests show the Charger rocketing from 0-60 at 5.1 seconds that's way faster, wait a minute, that's the same 0-60 time that MT reported for that 300-HP slug the 2005 Mustang GT.
The new Challenger shares the same platform (sharing the same assembly line) as the 300 and the Charger and that means the weight will be similar, expect a miminum of 3,900 and a maximum around 4,100-lbs. And if you want an SRT8 version, expect to pay around $40K.
Do you honestly think GM will sell you a 400-hp Camaro for $26k? Better do some serious re-thinking on that one. I'm guessing no, and that's just a guess, but if you want a real world (not dream world) evaluation of what GM might offer in the new Camaro, take a look at the Holden Commodore SS. The Commodore has the same RWD Zeta platform that the new Camaro will have, along with IRS and a 6L Chevy V8. It weighs 3,902-lbs and in USD the price is $37,500. But don't take my word for it, read the Edmunds article on the car.

JMO, the ultimate joke is on the people who'll shell out $10-14k over the cost of a Mustang GT for a 400-HP, 3,900-lb vehicle to gain the bragging rights of "mine is bigger than yours".
Having said that, if I can get a new Camaro with a 400-hp V8 for under $27k, I think it will look good in my garage next to my 2006 Mustang GT!
Where's the joke? A 2007 Mustang GT (premimum) lists for $26,865 offers 300-hp and 320-ft lbs of torque and weighs 3356-lbs. Where else can you expect to buy a 300-hp RWD V8 for under $27k?
