Actually 35,000 euros in Europe for a car like Audi is not that much. Volkswagen GTI for example costs over 30,000 euros.

Why does the GTI cost so much in Europe? What differences does it have over the US verision ($22K)?

Cars in general cost a lot more in Europe. Dodge Caliber for example cost $23,000 in Serbia and in USA its $10,000 less.

Reason? I really don't know.

Thanks for that info Zoran! I'll keep that in mind when I compare Euro cars with US cars

I wasn't talking about Europe and I'm aware of costs associate with makes/models in Europe.

I like the S3, but at $45K it's a little pricey for my taste. Of course, so is the new RS4 . . . but I'd sure like to have one!

Well, Audi never said that S3 will cost that much in the USA even if they start importing them. Since S4 in the USA starts at $46,000, I doubt that S3 will start at $45,000.

No prob.

I'm member at few Serbian web-sites about cars, so I know thing or two about prices in Europe.
One of really rich guys in Serbia recently bought Chrysler 300C Wagon which is basically Dodge Magnum with 300C's front end. Its not Hemi, its Mercedes V6 engine. Price ... 60,000 euros.

That's true. We'll have to wait and see if Audi does indeed import the S3.

15 horsepower more than the 3.2? I doubt it'd be worth the price difference. I would get a quattro DSG 2.0 FSI and chip it to 250hp and then sink some money into a suspension kit. Urryone with that engine is upping the boost a few PSI, and thus far it seems pretty safe.

Actually, I would get the Mazdaspeed3 cause I'm poor.

I generally like good, well done, hot hatchback coupes. They add such a practicality factor and if well styled, can be just as sleek as a trunked car. And if well engineered, they can be very stiff and light too. Unfortunately, many in the US just mindlessly associate cheap Japanese econocar to any hatchback, much to the detriment of the configuration. But it seems eyes and minds are indeed opening to the new breed of premium small cars for those who can distinguish between quality and quantity of car. The Mini, Mazda 3 and Audi A3, and perhaps the GTI and Jetta, are good examples that smaller cars need not be dray transportation appliances.

As for the A3 coupe, it's a shame Audi hasn't seen fit to bring that over in addition to the 5-door, especially given the 5-door's success. You see a lot of A3 Coupes in Europe and they are very sharp looking cars in the more refined, restrained but sophisticated European idiom. $45K would obviously be way too much -- I think Audi has way overpriced the 3.2 A3 as it is. But something a touch under $35K could be compelling for those who don't buy their cars by the pound. AWD for kitty-on-a-curtain grip, the lightning quick DSG shifter and great Audi interior, all with sporty yet refined design and the utility of a hatchback could be a real winner.

Of course, it'll be going up against the similarly powerful, though only FWD Mazdaspeed 3, which will be priced somewhere in the mid-upper 20's and perhaps the R32 GTI, which adds two more cylinders for smoothness and a more sonorous exhaust note. The Caliber SRT with some 300 ponies ought not to be disregarded either. And if Volvo would wake up and make a 250+hp R version of their new V30, that would really put them in the game too.

Wow, the Mazdaspeed 3 starting at only some $23K! I think Mazda's gonna have a real winnah here. The S3 looks sweet, but ~$10-15K sweeter???
