Interior = OK. Exterior = Something out of the 90s!
I have no trouble understanding the purpose of suv's. My fiance and I were recently discussing some areas in which we had each lived where an suv would be far more practical than the typical car due to road conditions. (primarily in SE Kentucky, NE South carolina, and NE Tennessee FYI) This is especially true if your lifestyle leans toward spending time in the way back if you know what I mean.
The problem is this obviously represents a limited number of consumers to say the least. In it's most popular year the Explorer likely sold at least twice as many units by itself as were really needed to fill this entire market niche. The majority of the remaining suv's were apparently bought by soccer moms and wannabes, a phenomenom which leaves me scratching my head as well since a truck has always made a relatively poor excuse for a car.
