John DeLorean, who of course invented the Back to the Future car, died today. He is also the man who created the muscle car when he jammed a V8 into a Pontiac Tempest and called it a GTO.

He was a great automotive mind and had many great ideas. He was equally flamboyant and seemed to be a larger than life personality.

Yeah, I didn't know he was the Dr. Frankenstein of the GTO, thanks for the info. I also found out yesterday that the U.S. government had aquitted him of his charges on his financing his car, the DeLorean, thru cocaine sales. Apparently this happened some time ago, because I never knew he had been aquitted.

I wish they would bring the Delorean back and see how it would do. I think the only thing holding it back 20 years ago was the crappy engine they put in it. Would love to see a two seater with a decent s/c V6, have the same finish as seen on the Shelby GR-1, and it's gotta have the gullwing doors as well.

He was setting up a factory in Ireland to build cars, as I remember and was stung by the feds with a briefcase of coke. Nonetheless, he was an automotive visionary and gave us a lot of good things.

RIP.

I recently wrote a story about him for one Serbian Web Site. At the time when he was arrested he missed phone call from the bank where loan for around $200 milion was approved. That loan could've save his company.
