Ok, so if I read this right... this could be like a Daimler Chrysler thing?

So that would leave Ford as only real American auto company?

It would appear so. It makes you wonder that if the GM-Nissan-Renault goes throug, will Ford joins forces with someone else?

It looks this is becoming more of a possibility. The GM board has voted to explore an alliance with Nissan-Renault. Here's the article.

Ford OWNS the above mentioned companies. (I think they are limited to a 33% ownership in Mazda, unless that has changed in recent years.)

That's correct. They don't own Mazda outright but have the controlling interest, in this case 33%. The GM/Nissan/Renault thing would be similar except that Nissan-Renault would each own 10% of GM.

I'm not feeling good about this. Does anybody remember how AMC partnered with Renault in the 80's? It didn't do AMC very much good....

Huh... Listening to the news this morning, I swore that certain parties on both sides wanted to put the brakes on this. If they do join, Mr. Ghosn should be able to do for GM what GM can't do for itself - sad.

I personally think its all smoke and mirrors.... I agree with DeLorenzo's commentary on Autoextremist basically stating that Kerkorian wants to get a return on his investment and bail.

GM is much to bloated and has way too much bureacracy to take on a partner. They're better off cutting a few layers of management, streamlining things and focussing on good engineering and quality. Its simple, but that's why no one will do it.
