Geely targeting US market in 2016

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/08/30/g...lp-from-volvo/

Following reports that it'd team up with corporate sibling Volvo on a Chinese-market car comes a report from Bloomberg that Geelyy would reattempt its entry into the US market. The Chinese brand had a display at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, but has been absent from the US scene ever since.

The Geely branded cars will be jointly developed with Volvo, and bank on the Swedish manufacturers reputation for safety and reliability. Geely's CEO, Gui Shengyue, explained, "Our acquisition of Volvo enhanced our image and overseas consumers are seeing us as an international company." This represents a change in rhetoric for the brand, after Geely Chairman Li Shufu hamstrung the idea of a closer pairing, citing fears that an association would harm Volvo's reputation.

The larger car is merely insipid, but the little blue thing is horrid.

I'd rather die than be the subsidiary of a Chinese auto company.

But that's just me.

Guarantee. I will never own either in my life.

Those are Chinese market Geelys. They'll have new models by the time they enter the USA market in 2016.

I'm sure Brits said the same thing then Tata from India (which just happens to be a former British colony) bought Jaguar and Land Rover, but they're both making high profits every year ...

Chinese auto market is now the largest in the world and their auto industry has improved a lot over the years. And more and more auto parts are now made in China ... I mean, where do you think the transmission for your Mustang was made?

Mexico

I would not want a car designed and engineered in China. I just wouldn't. It's just me.

Me neither. Not yet at least.

But look how far the Koreans have come with Kia and Hyundai in the last 10 years. They've probably made the most progress of any manufacturers in that time. True, they were far behind to start with, but now their cars had stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in their respective markets.

It'll be interesting to see how the Chinese handle Volvo. They're about to launch their all new platforms/engines, starting with the next XC90. As long as Volvo's are still designed and engineered in Sweden, they'll be fine. They can just use all that Chinese investment to produce cars they couldn't dream of under the Premier Automotive Group (Ford). I can then see Geely using that tech to further their own branded cars.

I wouldn't agree with that since that didn't work too well during General Motors - Saab "partnership".

Basically GM would give a budget to Saab to completely develop a new car and Saab would come back 6 months later and say "We spent all money on the suspension alone; we need more $$$ for the rest". In the end, Saab ended up being the most expensive GM division to develop cars, yet, their sales were the lowest.

I don't believe Saab was ever in the same league with Volvo. They had their strengths, but should have stuck to building planes.

I agree with those who would not buy a car from China. It's pretty difficult to have any faith in people who believe that putting melamine in baby formula is okay.

I like cheap stuff because stuff breaks no matter what and I'm much less upset when something cheap breaks than something more expensive.

Here's a good example ... Last summer my wife and I were in Greece and my flip-flops broke. It was a cheap brand, made in China, for which I paid maybe $5 in K-Mart in the USA before we left. So my wife made me buy a much nicer flip-flops made in Germany for which we paid 25 euros ($33), thinking that well it's quality and since they're 7 times more expensive so they should last much longer - WRONG. They broke before we even left Greece (and we were there for 10 days).

Would I buy Chinese made car? If its cheap enough - sure I would.
