My guess is you wouldn't be very involved in the actual flying process. Doubtless computers would interact to prevent collisions with other aircraft, and largely guide your flight path.

Where there is a will there is a way Jim bob and the standard idiot will jack something up. Right now when cars break down you just stop, all vitals would need to be double or triple redundant and regular maitenance would be imperative. I have repaired too many cars where owners just didn't feel like spending the money to repair items some as important as brakes. The only reason it is safer to fly is there is less air traffic and major companies are responsible for screw ups. Me personally the thought of John Q public Flying over my head and house scares the shat out of me. Hell wasn't it recently that some quasi-famous person smacked a skyscraper with a cessna? I can picture some Honda kid adding "aero" on his to make it fly tighter circles loosing control and taking out several.
