Hey guys check out the above link. Has anyone else ever heard of a federal gas guzzler tax? Sounds just like it's one of those $500 document fees. :notnice:

I've seen it on an 03 Cobra I almost bought a few years ago. It was $1500!!
More recently I saw a $2400 GGT on an SRT-8 Charger. Just another way the gov't bends over Joe Public.

Yeah, it's been with us for quite some time. Strangely enough it only applies to cars, not trucks and SUV's. Correct me if I am wrong.

You are correct. It doesn't apply to trucks. Trucks even have different emissions standards than cars, but the emissions standards and the gas-guzzler tax don’t make any sense, since truck/suv sales have been greater than auto sales in recent years. It is a BS bureaucratic double standard.

Yup, it just baffles my mind how trucks and SUV's do not have the gas guzzler tax considering the average mpg is substantially lower than that of the majority of sports cars on the market.

Thankfully there's no GGT on Trucks/SUV's, if so our dear Detroit automakers would all be in Chapter 11.

I guess the idea was because trucks were typically used for doing work.

The entire CAFE/Gas Guzzler system is very short sighted, consider that the Dodge Magnum and PT Cruiser are both considered Trucks for CAFE purposes... that just doesn't make sense.

heck it beats paying a gas guzzler tax on anything we can..correct me if i am wrong but is there also an exotic car tax as well....that would feel like heck getting beat over the head twice...

My '01 Lightning gets 9-10 MPG on premium only and has a couple of stickers in the door jambs declaring it a "low emissions vehicle". Just the poor mileage alone should void that. No Gas Guzzler Tax though.

Yeah, I've definately heard of it. Gas prices are high enough...a gas guzzler tax is even more ignorant.

The tax is the reason why GM put the skip shift feature on their 6 speed manuals.

Is it? Is it as ignorant as single (as in one (1), not marital status) people driving Suburbans around town? Or perhaps paying $10,000 for a "#125" on the bumper?

The way its implemented (PT cruiser loophole) is stupid, the exemption of SUVs and trucks is stupid, and the EPA fuel economy tests are laughably stupid. But a federal gas tax is not. I wrote a column about this that I like to think is pretty good, if anyone is interested ill post it.
