I remember seeing debates like these with him, all those years ago. That was several years ago, though. The 2010's unveiling was just a couple of years ago, so the griping -- which typically comes any time a new model is released -- is still fresh in some peoples' minds.
I remember the complaints. "Aerodynamics of a brick" and "slower than a Terminator" probably sums up most of them. The New Edge styling was initially panned, the SN-95s are still maligned...fact is, if you poll 100 different people by asking them what is the most beautiful car of all-time and you'll probably get 100 different answers. It's all subjective. Toyotas are some of the ugliest creations expressed into metal, glass and rubber and they still sell hundreds of thousands of them every year.

Only in the context of the Camaro winning 2010. I could have chosen a better word.

Well that's my point. Almost everyone is cautious financially now so that's an equal. But when one is inspired by an upgrade of their fav vehicle, they find a way to buy it. The diaper was not the inspiration somebody at Ford thought it would be.

See 'are we the black sheep' thread.

And then there's this:
Each body style Mustang has been an icon for the generation of car geeks who grew up with it (except the sn95 body – you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who would consider than an icon of the mid 90’s)...
Besides we're not talking the SN95 v S197. We're talking a mid cycle tweak of the S197 that had one glaring, controversial, boondoggle. We're trying to determine why the Camaro beat the new Mustang.

There are plenty of 'non-captive' lenders like Credit Unions & Regional Banks that are offering sweet financing offers - regardless of make of vehicle. Hell they gave me a 3.24 x 84 - and I'm disabled on a crap fixed income.

I see Camaros all the time! Seriously they're about as common as Mustangs of various models and years around here. 2010+ Mustangs I see occasionally. 5.0s I've seen... two.

One of them I see all the time.

Because, after several years on hiatus, and an eternity of hype (at how many shows was the concept Camaro shown? Geez, the car's design was old before it was ever released, IMO), the Camaro was the must-have car at the time. The articles I read attributed the lack of Mustang sales to the fact that the redesigned 2010 Mustang wasn't different enough from the 2005-09 model. It's sales 101, Charlie, and that's about the only thing GM has / had going for them! Like I said, though, the 2011 Mustang has garnered a lot of praise lately (Autotrader's most-searched car of 2010; numerous awards, even when compared to sales leader Camaro, etc). Once the Camaro's novelty wears off, the better car will reign supreme. The better of the three cars is, by far, the Mustang.

The 2005 Mustang was the must-have, new car at one time. Unfortunately, to most, IMO, the 2010's redesign didn't go far enough, especially when compared to the outgoing model, to elicit the kind of sales the competition-less 2005-09 Mustang enjoyed (well, sales began plummeting in 2008, even before the 2010 refresh's unveiling). Yeah, you and some others are, to this day, hung up on the "diaper," but I really don't think that has anything to do with why the all-new Camaro beat out the "I didn't go far enough with my design" 2010-11 Mustang. Perhaps if the new Camaro were selling as well as the 2005-07 Mustang, 150K+ units per year, you'd be onto something, IMO, but it's not.

Excellent point. There's a lot of assuming that most everyone that purchases a new Mustang, or even Camaro and Challenger for that matter, are enthusiast, when that's simply not the case. The folks on this site are the minority when it comes to overall sales. In my opinion, the Camaro won out this year because it's new, it's cool, it's Bumblebee! The new Mustang, on the other hand, isn't different enough. I traded my 2007 GT in on my current 2011 5.0. I can't tell you how many friends, co-workers and the like have said things like, "I thought you got a new car," etc.

Ha ha. Yeah, but if that were the case, the Dodge Challenger, arguably the sexier (albeit porkier) of the three American musclecars, would be the sales leader. It's not as if the Camaro's rear end is anything to write home about. Like I said, it's all about the hype and fanfare.

Didn't most of GM's profits go to paying back the loan so that Ford still has a competitor?

Hey, I was just representing my "S197 Retro Constituents".....

(sadly, to the exclusion of the older "S197itDependsHowFarIAmFromTheHead" voters. My bad... )
