Yeah, I always thought the '05='06 GTO was generally underappreciated as it was basically a very good car and certainly better than no GTO, which had been the status quo for 30 some years.
Sure, the mid-'90s styling, while not bad nor as extravagant as GTO Judge lovers might want, was getting a bit old but was clean and well proportioned. And the interior was closer to BMW in execution than is/was typical of GM. And the thing did perform very well, especially the 6.0 versions.
It really was more of an understated gentleman's performance coupe than some gaudy, screaming, look-at-me teen dream, but then, so were the original GTOs, so that was quite appropriate really.
Sadly, it sounds like a GTO replacement based on the G8/Camaro chassis will likely not come to be, though not completely dead. It would be a perfect complement to the Camaro and would add to Pontiac's credentials as a true performance brand. Hopefully maximum Bob Lutz will quit whinning about EPA/CAFE and just have Pontiac roll up their sleeves and make it.
