2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Makes 580 Horsepower
****, who is charging 900 bucks per tire? I see on Tirerack you can get them for almost half that

I think the car review mags are catching on to the sticky tire thing. In road and tract they reviewed 11 cars and they said although the z06 ran the fastest times around the track the rated it at 6 from the top the Boss laguna sec was rated 5 from the top and they kept making references that the z06 times were only due to the tires.

However I would think that GM would at least throw ZL1 guys a bone by offering them a regular street tire. Michelin's next closest performance offering is the Pilot Super Sport with a 300 tread wear rating and would conform roughly to the gen 2 Goodyear Supercar tire on the GT500 currently. The Super Sport also has a 30k mileage warranty (oddly in a split size situation like the GT500, Boss and ZL1 they only cover the rear tires for half that)
I didn't doubt you for one moment, I was expecting to hear the dealer. I know I've seen as much as a 700 dollar difference in having tires put on at the dealer versus having them put on elsewhere.
I thought the ZL1 was going to be equipped with Supercar G2s on the base models, and the Cup tires were going to be part of some optional "track" package that has only recently been spotted?
Any of you Motor Trend readers out there will see that in the recent "Best Driver's Car" test, they pointed out that the Cup tires were "ringer" tires, even compared to the Corsas. I found that odd. I don't really know which tire really is the "better" one, but both of them are a high-priced, low mileage, extreme grip tire.

A few weeks ago General Motors execs stopped our offices and were generous enough to show off and reveal a few specs of the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1. Since then, we’ve been itching for more details and numbers and we may have then here, courtesy of a forum member at www.Camaro5.com who recently obtained a dealer reference guide for the souped-up Camaro. We already know that the ZL1 will have a 580-hp, supercharged V-8-engine similar to the one stuffed in the CTS-V and Corvette ZR1. We also know the ZL1 laid down an impressive 7:41.27 lap time around the Nurburgring. And today, we learn that its curb weight is 4,120 pounds (weight distribution of 51/49), which is almost 300 pounds more than the Camaro SS that sits below it. Yes, it is heavy and now we know why Chevy spent a lot of time developing and tinkering with the suspension and Performance Traction Management system.
The forum poster also revealed a rough list of color choices and standard and optional equipment. It appears the ZL1 will share the SS’s color palate, with the addition of an exclusive Crystal Red tintcoat paint. Standard wheels are 20-inch, forged-aluminum wheels finished in low-gloss black, while a five-spoke design is optional. An exposed carbon fiber hood air extractor appears to be standard. Also standard are a long list of niceties like a premium BostonAcoustics sound system, power adjustable seats, and rear back-up camera. The official pricing should be announced in mid-November, though the expected production run and dealer allocation is still unclear.

Because its **** fun
Sure its a factory e-***** contest but why the hell not, people have pretty much got it in thier heads that they want to kill gasoline powered cars (nevermind everything electronic is about to get extra expensive due to a d-bag manuever by China) so enjoy it before an army of tree-huggers are so guilt stricken that they strap explosive squirrels to thier chests and get all jihadi on detriot. To be frank however, if you defeat the traction control and stability control on any number of the so-called super cars even with thier advanced suspensions you'll quickly get your tail handed to you ergo handing your kid with a freshly minted drivers liscence the keys to a 911 GT2 RS or a Aventador is just as bad as throwing him the keys to the ZL1 or GT500.
Dang I thought I had redacted my cup tire comment in this thread, oh well its on this site somewhere. A few weeks ago I found an article talking aby the GYG2SC tires on the ZL1. Pretty good move going with the Goodyear versus the cup tires from a cost and longevity standpoint.

I posted a pretty substantial response regarding the ZL1 in another thread. GM is going to beat the 'Ring times as hard as they can, so the uninformed, non-enthusiast crowd will see it and run with it. They've been doing that lately and it's getting a bit ridiculous.
I see they spec'd the Supercar G2 tires as the choice. I'm surprised they didn't offer a more track-ready package as an option for the car. I figured with the development costs they put into the C6 program, they'd do the same on the Camaro.
Everything I've seen/heard regarding the PTM on this car is good. It's almost scary. It's really taking the driver out of the equation and making results as consistent as they can be. I think from Ford's perspective, they need to provide something equivalent in the GT500 to really help the car out. The most common complaint I see is the lack of traction on the '10-12 cars, so I'm hoping that they've addressed this in detail before the rumored power boost in '13.
Back to the ZL1 though; I'm disappointed that they didn't offer a Recaro seat option like in the CTS-V. Those seats are fantastic. Sitting in the SS, the seats didn't wow me, and these don't look terribly different from what I've seen. I got spoiled after a few rides in the Boss 302, and wish now my '11 had a set of Recaros in it as well.

I am lol at the guys at Camaro5. Now the Fanguys say that weight makes no difference in how the car performs, where others are not to happy about that 4120lb number.
Truly a funny read. What I am waiting to see is the price. That one should really spark interesting convo's.

Couple of tidbits from the guide I found.
Flat bottom steering wheel so the car "feels" smaller. Why not just make the car actually smaller?
No power numbers for the Shelby
No weight numbers for the Shelby
The 5.4L doesn't have TiVCT
The Shelby doesn't have adjustable struts
And a couple of 'unique' features won't be so in a month
Mohawk hood? I see the target audience of the Camaro is revealed in print
They need a couple more stability control settings. "Is is wet or dry? What's better, Sport 1 or 2, maybe 3.5? Or maybe full off?"

Will be fun to see all the whining over the price of the ZL1 if they follow SOP.
The ZL1 has a traction advantage, an aero advantage and the LSA has some nice mid-range power all of which make up for the weight penalty.
And then it will be fun to see Ford unveil the "Nurburgring-tuned", 5.8L V8-powered GT500.
Hopefully Ford finds a way to reduce some weight and fits it with wider tires to harness the power.
