The thing about vehicles like the Mustang, Camaro, Charger, Beetle, etc... is that they represent brand loyalty. Each brand has people that hold their models up to being a most favorite. I can also see why that is motivation for VW to want to make a more masculine performance car that will run with the big dogs. With VW there are now two cars that can be taken seriously, the Bug and GTI... each appealing to loyalists of the original models.

They have their loyalty for the Beetle, it's the guys who consider 4/20 to be a national holiday.

Yeah, I don't quite get the inspiration for the taillights. I like them but they don't look like anything the Beetles of yore had.

I think the Beetle RS will probably be all kinds of fun to tool around in but I'd wager that it will probably be overpriced to everyone but the most hardcore Beetle enthusiast.
