ya, CVTs make so much sense. i remember when i was a kid, trying to figure out how to make one for a bike, and then i read about car companies actually making them and i felt totally ripped off.
But yeah, CVTs rule, i imagine them completely replacing automatics some day, since the people that get those don't give a darn about shifting, and these things provide the best performance. Manual transmissions will be around for a long time though, for obvious reasons. Now i just gotta learn how to drive stick!

Alright guys let me clarify! I have driven the ne 500 and the new freestyle! The diffrence is the CVT Transmission! Thats why it has the fastest 0-60 times as well as the quarter mile! I dont know if anyone has ever driven a vehicle with a CVT Tranny in it but it is an expeience in and of it self! No shifting it is great!
Alright! Thanks! That makes a lot of sense! Let's not use periods!

Sorry my ! button was stuck. Plus I have fat fingers. Im so excited about the CVT being offered, finally Ford has gotten with the program! They are working on the durability of the new CVT because it uses a bet to put power to the ground and I guess that belt cant sustain a whole lot of power!

Actually, it doesn't use a belt (like the doomed GM CVT did), the CVT Ford is using employs a chain, much more durable.

There 2 basic types of CVT's (very simplified)

Chain drive - Use a chain where the force is either transferred in tension or compression. This is the type of CVT used on the Audi A4 and the ill-fated GM products.

Toroidal - This uses two concave discs on the input and output sides and uses a caster which "tilts" changing the effective contact points and the ratios. This type of CVT is used on the Nissan Murano
