Where have you gone, Beaner and Ken? And are you coming back?
Those are questions listeners to alternative rock radio station WANZ-FM (Z-100.5) have been asking for the past week, ever since the popular morning duo disappeared without a trace.

Guy "Beaner" Patton and his sidekick Ken Heron are renegotiating their contract with Z-100.5, but until they sign on the line that is dotted, the station has pulled them off the air. Although their current contract expires at the end of this month, Patton remains hopeful they will return soon.

"There is nothing we want more than to be back on," he said late last week. "In fact, every single day we prepare to do the show in the event that they change their mind."

Station owners have offered Beaner and Ken a new one-year contract, Patton added, but they are hesitant to sign because they are uncertain about the future of Z-100.5, which has undergone several personnel changes in the past weeks. Although it is based in Tuscaloosa, the station also broadcasts into Birmingham.

Davis Hawkins, the general manager who hired Beaner and Ken, resigned in October and returned to alt-rock rival WRAX-FM (107.7 The X), and program director Mike "Hurricane Shane" Schoenherr left at the end of November to go to '80s station WBPT-FM (106.9 The Point). And on Wednesday, midday personality Amber Yeackle signed off and plans to move to Los Angeles.

Schoenherr said all the instability had "everything to do" with his decision to leave.

"We were brought in to make Z-100.5 a viable Birmingham radio station and we were led to believe by ownership it was going to happen," he said. "When the time came to put up or shut up, essentially they shut up.

"All of a sudden, the plan wasn't there anymore," he added. "We were told there was no set plan for relocating the studios into Birmingham."

Efforts to reach owners of the station's parent company, Apex Broadcasting Inc., were unsuccessful late last week.

Since they left the air after their Friday, Dec. 10, show, Beaner and Ken have received "hundreds" of e-mails from concerned fans, Patton said.

"There is no mention of you in the morning or on any commercials," one listener wrote. "Why won't the station tell the listeners something before we all tune in somewhere else?"

With their quick-draw humor, prank calls and wealth of pop-culture trivia, Beaner and Ken first made a name for themselves on The X, where they worked for three years before leaving the station after it was sold in 2001. They joined Z-100.5 in the spring of 2003.

Since coming back into the Birmingham market, Beaner and Ken have continued to climb the ratings chart. In the most recent Arbitron ratings book, their show finished third among their target audience of listeners 18 to 34.

During their ongoing "Desperate for Ratings" campaign, they have pulled several stunts to get people listening, but Patton insisted their current hiatus is not a publicity gimmick.

who are beaner and ken? by the way, don't be hatin on rick and bubba...i thought you all in birmingham would like them...cuz they do their show their...i can't beleive no one likes them

 

I hate morning shows before I say anything.......Even Stern.....Gimme music.
Beaner and Ken were great......They were on the X(1077) before and got kicked off for some two idiots who tried to be them. Tuttle and Kline- they blow.
Then Z100 was born in the summer of 2003... and they brought them back, finally non clear channel non corporate radio- we all rejoiced. We were all happy......they woke me up daily with their antics and amused me greatly......but alas it wasn't to be......

Rick and Bubba are TEN times worse than John boy and Billy on their worst day(and they infect my favorite station rock 99).....PLUS they are on the sissy soft rock music to kill yourself by station..... If you were not suicidal before you put the station on, you will be before you leave it.

 

up in Huntsville, they are on hard rock and metal station....i don't think they are horrible....John Boy and Billy are more redneck than Rick and Bubba...plus Rick and Bubba are all throughout the south.

Ours got killed years ago(I loved it)and is some crap oldies station now.

Agreed, they might get a lissen if they weren't on muzak radio.....

If anyones interested, 99x out of Atlanta is GREAT, IMO. You can check them out on the 'net @ 99x.com. Go to the Station button, then listen live. I tried listening to them when I went to Birmingham back on Nov. 5, 2004 to see Velvet Revolver @ the Boutwell Auditorium. Once I crossed that state line it was all fuzz. I managed to scan through the stations over there in AL, and I can understand what you are going through.

 

Yea- I love 99x. IN Birmingham we have so few, I can't even fill up one preset with music...... It aint New York City for sure. Atlanta has PRIMO radio.

We have:
Magic 96(96.5), variety of older crap, not too bad, but its an enhanced radio station so I keep it. Has disco saturday night.
Rock 99- been my #1 preset for my whole life, classic rock, but a little corporate.
z100- Rock- Velvet Revolver etc....
1077 the X- corporate crap rock radio. playlists. If you like a song, you won't like it anymore after they play it 1,000 times.
1069 the point- 80s but they play the SAME song 1,000 times. (Turn up the radio by autograph).

Anytime we get something good, it gets killed and replaced with the below:

Of course: We have like 3 million Country,religious,soft rock, oldies and Urban stations. :notnice: If I listened to that crap I would not have enough preset buttons.
One of these days I need to get the ***** to put XM in the Mustang. I had it in the alero for this exact reason.

 

Now if you could show me a station that played Waylon, Willie, Hank, Merle, Johnny Cash, and Conway Twitty all the time, hey, a boy can dream can't he?
