This is the third year Grand Am will be in Birmingham. I went to the first two GA races at Barber, and enjoyed them both. Barring a catastrophe, I'll be there again this year. In 2003, the crowds were so small I felt like it was my own little secret. There were more people in 2004, but still didn't feel crowded. This year's event was deliberately scheduled to coincide with an off week for Nextel Cup, so that NASCAR drivers could participate.
I strongly recommend spending a little extra for paddock access. You can get up close to the cars, and sometimes even chat with drivers and crew.
This is a good race weekend for fans, even casual fans like me. The Barber Motorsports Park is excellent. There are no bleachers, but hillsides all around the track. Lots of great sight lines. Bring your blanket or lawn chairs.
If you need any more reason to attend, here it is: The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum:

over 900 motorcycles, as well as Lotus and other race cars.
