The tax disc is the british version of your registration tags. you buy it either every 6 or 12 months. It is supposedly to pay for road maintenance (hmm....the jury is still out on that one...). If you don't have one (and don't display it in your windshield), you car can be taken and crushed.....

Sorry about the SAMPLE bit, but tax discs have a habit of being cloned.....
