with the '05 GTO getting the 400hp LS2 I think there better be a SE version stang out sooner than later. The current mach 1 is more than a match for the current GTO,but things will change in '05.The 300hp GT will not be close to the 400hp GTO.I think ford should put the '04 cobra motor or a 5.0 version of the DOHC mach 1 motor in one of the new stangs soon.I think I will wait to see.

This has been argued lots of times before. I said almost the same thing awhile back, and we had a huge discussion about it. I am waiting to see if a SE model will be coming down the line. I would prefer one with the current Cobra's engine as well.
However, the last time i debated this on here, we basically all came to the conclusion that the GT is perfectly fine with 300hp. That is plenty of power for a car as nice as the GT at a price around $25,000. No other cars out there offer that kind of power for that price.
Now, for me personally, i am waiting for a SE. I own a '97 Cobra right now that has roughly the same power as the new GT. The '05's are tempting, but i know i would eventually be disappointed when a SE model appears, if i traded my Cobra for the GT.

You have to understand the GT is a base model V-8 so 300 is great the 350 400 GTO are SE's compareing them is fun but not apples to apples. With the Mustangs weight advantage 350-375 would probably spank the 400 GTO.

At selling under 5000 so far, I think you'd be more interested in SEEING one, let alone getting BEAT by one.
Besides, at the cost...the GTO is in a different price category.
Its like saying 'the SRT4 doesn't have enough HP do deal with the new mustang'
Well yeah, its cheaper and has less hp and a smaller engine etc.
Ford doesn't NEED a special edition yet....GM NEEDED a pony car...

Different marketplace between the two cars, GT and GTO, IMO.
Mustang buyers will buy the car because of it's styling cues which have been proven over the last few decades. LS2 GTO has so far been a styling disastor for GM that will probaby only attract die hard GM loyalists who can't afford the new Vette.
The real question isn't if the Mustang GT has enough power. It will sell as well as ever if not better than the 94+ cars. IMO what is important is that the GTO ups the bar for the special edition Mustang. Afterall, they will be closer in price and rarity.

The GTO is an over blown Grand Prix, and very ugly. The equvalent to it would be putting a cobra engine in a Mercury Sable, some ground effects and a nice stero system. Not even in the same class as the 05 Stang...IMO.

Boomer you can check to tell me if I'm wrong but that GTO won't be avalable in Canada in 05 due to the fact that it failed its crash tests up here,as well you can correct me if I'm wrong but I heard that volvo had a hand in the mustang body and if there's anyone that knows safty its volvo.
And for price mustang is in a leage of its own for a 300hp car .

besides the fact that no matter how much horses they put under the hood, they gotta do something about the looks of the new GTO

GTO is not available in canada at all.
And yes, has to do with bumper standards from what I read.
Not sure if they changed anything to allow 2005+ in, but as of 2004 nope.
I remember reading that they were going to try to get them in and such.
On a related note...I DID see one here (NY plates)
Nice blue colour, but I had to look twice to see. I really did honestly think it was a grand prix, but the flush fog lights gave it away.
Not the same wide track proportions, but the same look.
If it was black, I wouldn't have even thought twice....it was a GP.
Looks alright I guess, too sedate though.
It blends in REALLY well. If thats what your going for....

B) As a Sports Car So-So
Perfornmance slightly less than a Mach 1
Costs; it's realistically going for about $36K+ out the door.
Lot's of goodies for $8-10K will easily push the GT into the 450-550 streetable and reliable HP range
Interior is nice.
Looks; GTO = Boooorrrrrring
I owned a Grand Am and Firebird; never again wiill I buy a Pontiac. Don't want to go into the 2 year warranty saga with Pontiac on a 8 month old car. Well I shouldn't say never; if a 55-57 FireChief .....

The GTO is actually a Holden as I am sure we all know. Not a Grand Am/Grand Prix or other FWD vehicles. Design is boring, understated, stark as is considered the norm in Australia. (Somehow, I view Aussies as being the speak softly and carry a big stick type of folks.ANZAC/Tobruk/and all that. ) Very Euro, Post-modern, etc. We could also call it a Sleeper or Q-ship.
It is a fine vehicle in its own right. Not a 2+2 sitting type at all. More comparable to larger European sedans but has big inch V8 power.
I do not understand all of the Mustang fan boy criticism of the GTO, nor the GTO types dishing the new Mustang. Jeez, muscle cars are once again available as new vehicles. Who cares?

Mustang fan boy criticism? If you haven't noticed, it's hardly just fan boys criticizing the GTO's bland styling. Magazine reviews haven't been too positive about the styling (although most say it's not bad). The public has had its say by not going out and purchasing very many of the GTO's.
As a car, the GTO is, well, nice. It does, however, look like any typical base model pontiac. Just because a car is a sleeper, it doesn't mean it has to be uninspiring. And if they were going for a sleeper car, why did they call it the GTO?

It was yet another in a long line of quick-fixes for GM. Colorado is another one brought in to fix a 10 year out of date p/u quickly without bothering to invest any money to develop new vehicles. Catera comes to mind as well.
