Why do you have to 'break in' a big brake kit?

My 1999 Mustang just left Midas with new rotors and pads on the front and I was just wondering: do those chain stores even bother to break in your new brakes?

I'm getting a big brake kit for my 05' this April and was wondering how come all of them have in-depth break-in directions.

Why doesn't the manufacturer just take 2 minutes to break them in with a machine or something?

Has anybody here just driven with a new kit, but very carefully, to settle them in via natural, everyday-style driving?

No.

Probably because they don't want to hear complaints from people who didn't break them in properly.

They have to be broken in with the pads you're using, and usually the rotors and pads are sold separately. I'm guessing the taking the coating off the rotor and then letting it sit around for a few months before it got installed would make it rusty, and then people would complain about their brand new rotors looking like crap too.

They probably won't ever get hot enough if you do that.
