Scratches all over the hood in the clearcoat and on top of the left quarter panel, and tons of overspray beads on the top right of the hood. Refused to buy it til they fix it, said they can buff it out. We'll see. Was severely disappointed.

I agree. I refused to sign anything until it was fixed. Gives my salesman a bit more incentive to get them to do it right hopefully.

Man, that sticks. You did the right thing. We recently picked up a new Pontiac G6 for my wife. It is black and we picked it up at night. The next day I noticed tons of scratches, swirls and 1 paint chip. Drove it right back to the dealer and handed them the keys while saying "This has got to be the worst car I have even seen a dealer give someone. Whoever PDI'd the car should be fired". He asked what was wrong and I said "If you can't figure it out perhaps you shouldn't be in the automotive business". I then walked out of the store. He called me later that morning and said "Your car will be ready for you late this afternoon". I showed up and they polished and waxed the car and fixed the chip in the paint.

I have a few minor scratches in my hood, supposedly hurricane damage, but they're going to fix it. Due to the hurricane though their bodyshop is WAY backed up. So, I could have said "fix it now or I ain't buying it" or I could take it then and have them fix it later. They gave me a "WE OWE YOU" slip with the details, will do the loaner thing.

I wasn't going to wait even another day or two to get my hands on this car.

They've been a good dealer, this is my second car from them, and I'm certain they'll do things right. I'm also certain there will probably be a few other issues with the car so no need to be overly demanding with the dealer. Did I mention this was X-Plan too?

Besides, they've offered to blackout the rear between the lights free when they do the hood work.

I like them, they treat me well, so a minor scratch in an aluminum hood doesn't shake me up too much.

I would have bought it on the spot, but the last vehicle I bought had a similiar issue. Rock chips on the hood.

They said they would pay for the work, just take it to a local bodyshop since they were an out of town dealer and have the estimate sent to them.

Turns out, there was enough chipping to merit the hood needing to be repainted, but the dealer would only offer to pay 200 bucks.

I'm not worried at all about being overly demanding. I'm purchasing a new car. It should not have 10-15 scratches on the hood. It should not have 100's of paint beads from overspray on the hood either.

I wasn't going to take a similiar chance here.

I actually had some scratches/swirl marks under my clear coat pointed out to me at a mustang meet. I bought my car at the end of august of '05...do you think it's too late to get the paint fixed from the dealer?

I think that might be a little too late unless it's under the clearcoat, not in the clearcoat. The scratches on mine were not normal swirlmarks or surface blemishes, you could feel them with your finger as you ran it over them. Was pretty bad.

Oh, mine are under the clearcoat...i have what looks like some swirl marks, and another spot that looks like something was patched up. you can only see in sunlight. You think I could take to any ford dealer? I don't live by the one I purchased the car from. I have owned 3 american cars, and they all have @(#tty paint jobs. I guess that's not what you pay for, but a little attention to detail goes a long way.

Many new cars simply have cheap paint, import and domestic.

I'd take it to the dealer, and have them look at it. I know how you feel with a black car, if you can have them look at it and say "yes something is wrong" -- well more power to ya!

If there is something wrong, ie an imperfection underneath the clearcoat it could damage the paint itself over time and cause more serious problems when it is out of warranty.

I wasn't doubting your choice of action. Just adding another view to the mix.
With your prior experience with the dealer, I'd definitely have done what you did.

Oh, it wasn't the dealer I bought my Mustang from that did this, was just garnering from past experiences. I got it resolved, this dealer ( Sewell Ford in Odessa, Tx ) was amazing and easy to deal with.
