Ugh, people's perception of the Mustang's rep
I'm getting tired of telling people about my new car and then getting the "it's just a Ford" attitude. Then they go on telling me how it will only last for 50k miles and how it's so unreliable, etc etc. Then they start comparing them to the older Mustangs as if it had *anything* in common with them.
More often than these are the type of people who are on their 2nd 30k+ car that their daddy bought for them. People need to learn some respect and tact. I just spent 30k of my OWN
money, not my daddies, for a car that *I*
chose, not my daddy...and you're gunna sit here and tell me how crappy it is? You're lucky I don't
deck you.
How do you guys deal with this?

Why do you care what others think of your car? You bought it because you wanted it. Don't get the attitude toward the car found on this board confused with the general public... the folks here are all mustang enthusiasts and not everyone you run into is gonna share that same feeling.
It's real easy, I I have tons of pictures and stories about how much people love me car. I couldn't make half that stuff up I've experienced while owing my Mustang. (3 1/2 months mind you) Ask them how many people come up to talk to them about their car.
Remember it doesn't matter what other people think. If you do you'll go through life angry and never please everyone. As long as your happy that's all the matters.

I feel your pain, man. I grew up the middle class kid on a scholarship attending a high-end private high school. When it was time to get our licenses, these kids were getting brand new beamers, Porshes, Corvettes, etc. I purchased a 1991 Saturn SL2 with my own finances. I don't think they ever stopped picking on me for that, lol.
There's absolutely no way to change their attitude. They were raised to look down on anyone trying to make their up through life and earn a place for themselves. They were given a place in life, you were not. In their mind, that makes them better than you.

, I think you should just ignore them. People are going to believe what they want to believe. Ford has had a long history of bad vehicles. The mustang has been sorry IMO since 1974. I hated all the models body stylewise from the 80's up to 04. I fell in love with the 05, and when you make cars that have as many problems as some fords did, you're going to have a reputation. It's up to us as new mustang owners to show we're above all the slamming. I'd start by smoking all their
on the road. To be candid. I personally have concerns about the long term reliability of the Mustang, but since it is sort of a Mazda vehicle and since Bill Ford has taken over the company, I have hope that Ford will start turning around its image and that the new Mustangs are so well built that they will last into the 100K mile range.
Jeez, sounds like it's their problem. There are thousands upon thousands of classic Mustangs still on the road, and pretty much all of them have 100, 200, 300+ thousand miles on them. I think the quality has only gone up in the last 40 years, don't you? sounds like your car is an ignorance/snob detector, lol.
If I were you, I'd use this one as a barometer for finding new people to hang out with/call friends. If they can't get over their country club BS, there are pleny of great people out there that don't have this social hurdle to jump.

Btw, thanks for the replies everyone.
I guess I'm just kinda upset because I love my car so much and I'm so happy and proud of it, I tell everyone I know about it...then they poo on my parade...
Ok, well pooting on my parade might be a little exaggerated, but they just aren't as impressed or excited as I would like/expect...it's just kinda a downer...=P

97% of all direct feedback I have gotten about my car is POSITIVE
Coming out of food shopping yesterday, there was a guy walking around the car, checking it out from all angles trying to look inside (but NOT touching).
When I walked up he was walking away and started complimenting me on the car - how swet it was, that he hadn;t seen one done up like mine. He asked about the optional appearance package (he was chekcing out the chin spolier and hood) so I had to tell him she was a self assemlbed kit.
He was nothing but complimentary.
Up in Orlando at the meet I had in Kissimmee with 05GT OCD, MTAS, and Mustangshadow, when we were doing the slow car cruise. I did hear a few negative comments (one women snidely commented as out four GTs rolled by that "your cars are out of style...."......) but they are definitely few and far between for me.....

I honestly think it's rude. Because these people have always had their car's bought for them, they have no conception of being proud of what you *chose* and *paid* for. And on top of that, they have no idea what they are talking about, which I admit, bothers me (I guess I'm petty).

To say that it's difficult for "regular" folk to hang around with the ultra-spoiled folk would be an understatement. If you continue to swim in those waters, you will continually be challenged with the holier than thou currents.
Keep in mind 3 things:
1) You can sleep well at night knowing that you EARNED your car, you weren't BORN with it
2) More people talk about and covet the '05-'06 Mustangs than probably every single Japanese/German car COMBINED
3) They just don't want to admit that a self-earned 29,000 car can be sooo much more cool than their hand me down $40,000 BMW.
It's going to happen - both ways.
The new Mustang is not in any way bland. It is visceral - and that means folks will generally respond strongly to it - one way or the other.
They can vote with their wallet just like you.
Those tha are nasty about it have not learned the basics of courtesy and politeness, and do not need any response from me. My emotional state is not dependent on them. I feel for them, in fact, because they probably spend most of their days in this unhappy state.
I am grateful I do not have to live like that.

It's always amusing when you do get a negative comment and the shlub climbs into a car you'd have to pay me to own.
Inevitably a 3 series BMW or faux luxo sedan ala lowly lexus or acura.
When was the last time you saw a bus load of screaming kids all hanging out the windows giving a beemer the thumbs up?

I live in hollywood where you are what you drive and my grilfreinds v6 gets alot of respect and attention..the ricers even give it props..So don't listen to those clowns..FORD IS AMERICAN MADE MUSCLE..I give ricers poo on a daily basis for only having a 4 banger..
Its amazing to me that people actually say things like this. Its just rude. When I am driving I just drive. I could care less what other people drive and even if what they drive is less than visually appealing to me in some way i would never down talk it because I have been there when I was younger. I will be honest, if someone pulled up to me and said "that wont last 50 thousand miles" or "your car is out of style" I think there might get out of the car and ruin their whole day. I know its not the most mature thing to do, but some people need to be taught a lesson in manners, even if its just making them poo their pants when you start screamin. Luckily here in Iowa you dont hear that stuff much I dont think. Guess I will find out.
Maybe some of the members of the "silver spoon" set don't appreciate your Mustang GT, so what? You can't tell me that you don't get compliments from people while you are driving around in a Redfire Mustang GT.
There are people on this forum that have other cars that cost twice as much as your GT, but they bought the car you have. There are others that wish they could have your car for just one day.
When I was young I had a 1967 MGB, all my friends had muscle cars, and looked down their noses at a little British sportscar, but I loved it. What others think about your car is not important, all that matters is how you feel about it.

Had that happened to me last night, I was having a car meet at a with some imports and some few domestics, had like 2 70's muscle cars there and some pontiacs and some chevy's. Gull pulls up in a Scion thinking he's all bad hiney. Got intake, headers, All he has. walking up on my car. Smirkin and almost getting out a little giggle. BOLD is him talking.....
"Yo, who's stang is this? "mine" "dude its sooo not good looking like the older one, its nothing better than the older ones" "i beg to differ" "how much you pay for this" "27" "sh** son you could of payed 15 and got a real machine like my baby, cause no offense, my car can take you, Im almost running 12s." Now remember, he is running the new Scion with just an intake and Headers. I said since you talk alot about your baby being better, lets take out there and lets see you prove it.
Took him out on Rt. 38, had another friend of mine with a video camera taping. Taped the whole thing! Had the torque tune in, light was red. Went green, I was off like a prom dress! Slammin into second, third, going about a buck. He was straggling, i cant even count how many car lengths. Took the U-Turn, headed back to the Target. Parked it, guy came back, acting like he didn't want to lose any respect. "Yo man, I would of had you if I didn't slip going into 3rd gear" I could of had you" , i respectfully said. "You never had me, cause I was gone already in second gear, there's no way u were gonna catch me unless you had NOS. I said, "face it, you talk a lot of cr@p you can't back up. Learn to talk when you can prove something rather than embarrass yourself!" I walked away, talked to a bunch of my other buddies and to review the footage of the video tape. Guy got in his car, spun out and left.
Seriously, no respect for anyone. I'm always nice to people when it comes to their rides, but I'm not gonna disrespect them outloud about something. I keep that to myself......
