Trouble filling gas tank

Hi all,
As the title says, I have recently started having some serious issues filling up the tank. I just took a road trip and stopping for gas was very frustrating. The pump kept kicking off about every 0.5 - 1 gallons, and I could hear it bubble up the filler neck each time.
It only seems to be after I've been driving for a while, since if I just shoot down to the gas station after it's been sitting a few days, I don't seem to have this issue.

I'm assuming it's some sort of venting issue, but wanted to get some opinions before I just go with the shotgun approach and start tearing things apart.
Any ideas on this?

Thanks all

Consider searching the sub-forums by selecting the search function menu.. When the search box window displays, type in fuel tank vent issues... There have been known issues with the vents/breathers causing fill up issues since 2005.. I recall from back in day there were threads submitted about the venting issues causing problems when filling up the tanks, but can't remember the name of the threads submitted that far back.. Meanwhile, sorry that I couldn't be more helpful

You Can Scroll Down Below Reply to Related Topics and See this Has Been Ongoing Since 05. I have Had 3 Sn197's and They All Liked to Be Filled Up with the Gas Pump Handle Pointing Down and Fill Hose Up. Yes Upside Down From Normal. I don't Even think About it Anymore It's Just How I have to Fill Mine. Oh and I have to Ease on Trigger Little by Little to Full Open. If I just Blast it, it Kicks Back. Like I said So Used to it I really had to think about how I actually fill it. Worth a Shot! Let us Know if it Works in your Neck of the Woods on your Stang!

I had an 05 Gt,07 Gt/Cs and Now a Shelby. Some Stations are More Problematic Than Others. Of Course in California we have the Most Elaborate and Intrusive Nozzles. It's Hell to Fill a 5 Gallon Can These Days! They Don't Put the Little Snap Vent on Our Cans Anymore! Once I found a Station that worked the Best I stuck with it. Of Course if you Travel that is Not an Option.

Oh on a Side note I like to fill up at Between 1/4 and 1/2 Tank on My Vehicles so the Pump Never Sucks Air. The Fuel Lubricates the Pump. Years of Selling High Dollar Oem Pumps reminds me it's Cheap Insurance. At the Very Least I Advise Filling as Soon as it touches 1/4. Also These Days in California we never Know when the Grid is Going Down So always a good Idea not to Wait till Tomorrow to Fill if you are Coming Home from a Trip! Also if we have to Run From our State Being on Fire!

BTMO!

Good Luck!

KC

Thanks Kevin! I do remember when I had my first S197 GT (2005) I experienced the same issues with vapor lock when attempting to fill up the gas tank... Luckily my "05" was still covered under the extended warranty and Ford replaced the gas tank with the revised breather vent under TSB revision 6-3 IIRC? Anyhow, ever since the tank replacement, there were no further vapor lock issues... If only I could remember which thread I posted on about this back then

I had an 05 V6 that I bought new, and had no idea this was an issue. The upside down pump was the norm for me. Holy cow.

It was indeed an issue which required 2 TSB's thru Ford... The vapor lock issues weren't fully resolved until after the 2005-06 model years when Ford replaced the fuel tanks with revised breather vents in the filler neck sections!

I always wondered if rolling up on a 2x6 piece of wood with the rear tire would help. That would maybe help gas flow to the other side better.

I doubt this makes any sense but any time we travelled in our '07 GT to the northeastern part of the country, 'upside down' was the only way to fill up. One of the attendants along the NJ turnpike alerted me to this since we could not fuel up our own cars in NJ. Once we returmed to the south, no more issues. We actually never had issues anywhere in the US or Canada during our many travels, just NY NJ and New England.

I would Bet they Have the Problematic Filler Nozzles Like California as I Believe New York at Least Uses Similar New Car Smog Standards as California. At Least in My Upside Down Works California Nozzle Issue! Yep! {Reference Post 3}

Here is a question. All these TSBs are they still valid today?
I am having a real hard time with my 06 GT. Filling up is such a chore. I have to pump the gas at a turtles pace, otherwise...well you know. Nothing else works.
Or is this something I have to fix myself?

They are still valid, but once the factory or extended warranty has expired, parts and labor costs are no longer the responsibility of the dealership in question!
