would be a squeeze on the "stock" 18x8.5 rims. most shops will stop at 275s.

NO! a 285/40R18 is designed to fit a 9.5-11 rim. While tires are ruggedly over engineered installing a 285/40R18 on anything less than a 9.5" wide rim introduces the increased possibility of catastrophic failure which can range from damaged property to loss of life for either the driver, passengers, and fellow motorist.

Keep in mind that one of the most important safety systems on your car are your tires. You cant safely control the vehicle (turn, brake, move) if they fail.

Observe all the engineering and safety data for the tire which for the former is generally easily found at the manufacturer's website and occasionally at a tire distributor's website.

Its the only medium that tethers your car to the rest of the world.
