"For 1999, the Mustang will remain on the current "Fox" chassis, which dates back to the 1970s. However, in 2002, it will shift to a version of the same platform planned for the upcoming 2000 Lincoln LS and the 2001 Thunderbird. This will eliminate one more platform for Ford, an important objective of Alex Trotman's Ford 2000 program. Economies of scale gained by platform-sharing for the 2002 Mustang should help Ford offset the cost of the more sophisticated Lincoln-based chassis."
