Actually, since the price of gas is projected by DOE to be $4.75 a gallon by 2010, Ford has rushed to development a new concept called, internally, "Mustang III" as a replacement for the current size Mustang. This line of thinking may be familiar to those old enough to remember the Mustang II.

Remember the ad? Score: Mustang II, Boredom 0.

The Mustang III will not have 13 inch rims like the Mustang II and will be better proportioned. The base engine will be a new light weight, injected L4 and the high-performance engine will be the new 3.5 V6.
Look for lots of options in the top two versions. GT as a model will go away, as too many people still link GT to V8s (and rightfully so!).

This idea, of a Mustang III, was one reason that Ford dropped the wagon and hatchback versions of the Focus for 2008. Several full size clay models have been done, and after photos, etc, most have been destroyed or modified, as extra security measures.

And finally,,,,, none of this is true. Enjoy your Thanksgiving!

I would imagine they dont want any info to slip out so they dont loose '08 or '09 sales from people waiting for the new model.

There were people who saw portions of the car at the presentation at Cobo hall last year.
There were people who saw a sneak peak at the NAIAS 2 years ago.
And there were people who went to a focus group earlier this year/late last year.

There are people on this site who are in the know on a LOT of what the 2010 mustang will be. I know its hard to seperate rumour from truth, but a lot has been said on what we will get...short of showing pictures.

Do you guys think there is a possibilty that there are more than one possible concept being produced like they did for the 94' Model year. If I am correct there were 3 different versions of the 94' Mustang and one of the rejected concepts for 94' was revived for the 99' model. Maybe the people who have seen the next concept only saw one of possibly 2 or 3 concepts being produced. ( The mystery continues)

Design for the exterior was all but finalized over 2 years ago.

What people saw was not a concept though.

^This is true. I'll just wait until they display the final model, concepts and ideas in the industry change constantly. It's too hard to just guess, so I dont.

If my memory serves me, you are correct. The three were called "Rambo", "Schwartzernegger" and "Jenner". It turns out that "Jenner" was '94-'98, and one of the other two (Rambo maybe?) was '99-'04.

Which makes me wonder how Ford makes these decisions...

There's pics of the 3:
They were for 1994 only
99 was a new design

Schwarzenegger was the chosen one for 1994

Actually the Rambo looked alot more like the last-gen Firebird than anything else.

So, if some have seen the '10 as long as 2 years ago, that means the design will be 5 years old before it hits the streets! Also, since then, the Camaro concept has been shown, so I wonder if that car has sent Ford back to the drawing board....or at least made them reconsider any of the design aspects. I guess GM actually did Ford a favour by showing the Camaro so early......at least it knows what it'll be up against and can make any necessary changes in secret.

I know what I want the '10 to be, so I'm worried it won't live up to my expectations. C'mon Ford, be brave and prove me wrong.

Either way, I'm more than happy with my '05

I hope it is ugly and performs like feces - that way I won't feel compelled to tell my wife that I am selling the 05 convertible Mustang I will have just finished paying for so I can buy a new and start paying all over again!

Most cars are designed way ahead of when they come out...unless they are fast tracked. It won't be old because it hasn't been shown outside a small group.

The Camaro unfortunately (if so close to the concept) will have been shown for at least 3 years...and might be long in the tooth. The general public has seen for years, something they can't buy. Will it live up to the hype it created? or will people just be sick of it by the time it comes out?
Ford hasn't shown the 2010 to us yet, so it won't be old.

One thread a while back mentioned that Ford was a bit concerned that the look of the 2010 might be considered ripping off the 2010 Camaro, as it has very similar characteristics (ie: hips etc)
Even though the design was done before the Camaro was ever shown to the public.

I'm sure it'll be a good looking car, but more aggressive than the current model. Not everyone will like it though.
But you might want to like it if you want a 5.0
