I spent most of yesterday flying in small planes, shooting footage for a commercial. It's for a local Flight Instruction School. In addition to a lot of aerial footage, we we were getting shots of take-offs and landings as well.

That's where the Mustang came in.

We received permission to set up on the taxiway and track the takoff shots. Naturally, I pressed my assistant into service shooting, and volunteered the Mustang as our camera platform.

When small planes are trundling up and down to the end of the runway, you just see, well, a taxiway that runs parallel the full length of the runway.

But when you're in the Mustang and look all the way down that ribbon of asphalt, you get a strange feeling in your gut.

When the planes perform their takeoff run, they go to full throttle, of course, and so did the Mustang. By the time we were halfway down the taxiway, she was roaring at 110 and asking for more. I couldn't push further; I had to provide the angle for the shooter, so we topped out at about 110mph.

She handled it, as many of you already know, effortlessly. She had one thing to say; "You want more? Well c'mon!"

I got to repeat the run several times. And got the pleasure of it all being off street on a completely empty strip of long, smooth asphalt.

Some days life is extra sweet!

I can't wait to get out on the Taxi-way or closed runway one day.

 

There is one stretch of road in northern Missouri along a flood plane that is straight and flat as a pancake for about 4 miles. It is the only place that I have been able to let the pony really run free...she does 120 for those 4 miles and just sings. I honestly think she feels better to drive after a good gallop but don't recommend doing so in normal driving conditions...
