I wish the OEMs used bottom mount rear speakers so it is easier to swap out without tearing apart the interior.

What volume setting do you normally use?
Not sure what happened but the pass side rear speaker makes a static noise with the bass. I'm not sure I want to argue with the dealer over it, but I haven't decided.

Just looking at it I don't think they come out from the trunk either.

I only turn the volume up half way most of the time. But I keep bass maxed and fader set mostly to the front.

Sorry for the hijack.

Ford WILL replace speakers under warranty, no matter how abused they may have been.

You have to take the whole friggen back seat apart, if you want to change out your back speakers.

lol thanx ... weird, cuz the sedans I've seen usually have the speaker grilles visible and open into the cabin - but ours are hidden under the deck under plastic/fabric/etc??

I have the Shaker 500 in my '07 GT.

2 speakers on the rear deck but no grills.

The speakers are hidden under the fabric.

Ford might tell you that they did it because it looks cleaner, but I'm sure the real reason is to reduce cost.

It's an old technique to "de-content".

Same reason why the rear axle is unpainted. They save a few cents on every car.

My rear-end cover and pumpkin on the GT is painted black, but the axle tubes are unpainted. Ford/Visteon has not painted axle tubes or even pumpkins as far as I can remember. Dana, OTOH, did paint the entire rear-end assembly on the 03 E-250.

Here is a picture of my speaker "grille". It's visible.

Reviving an old thread, I guess. But I want to start replacing speakers, and alas I now see it's the top-mounted deck speaker variety as mentioned above in this thread. The shop manual isn't very forthcoming, either.

So what do I do? Only remove the rear seats and I will have access, or do I need to uninstall the a-pillar and rear quarter panel trim too? Anybody got pics of the process? Thanks

Answered my own question. The rear deck (aka "parcel shelf") for 2007+ is a single piece unit now. Here are the removal instructions:

Not that bad to remove. Took me about an hour to change out my speakers and put everything back together.

I'm guessing the rear speakers are top mounted so they can use a sealing caulk to keep speaker vibrations down. Haven't had one out to check, but have noticed on most newer cars the door speakers are usually sealed to the steel door speaker pockets.

This was probably an upgrade from their original plan of outsourcing them to Vietnam. In other news, sources say new special editions may come with upgraded speakers produced in the affluent country of Mexico and will cost buyers a premium due to the relatively high cost of labor there.

Next mod: Upgrade chinese speakers to mexican speakers.
