So thats where all my money is going....

I sat down to do a budget yesterday to see where my money has been going and to see if I can save some money by cutting back on things. The most interesting thing I came across during this process was figuring out fuel costs. I normally fill up like 2x times a week at 35-38 bucks a week, so I rounded up to $40 to add in extra for gas prices going up. Well I nearly crapped myself when I added up everything...at 80 bucks a week, I'm spending more on gas then I'm spending on my car payment! Ugh, I guess thats the price of admission with having this car and living about 20 miles one way to work...

Let's see...
20 miles one way to work = 40 miles/day
5 days a week, that's 200 miles.
52 weeks, that's a little over 10,000 miles.
Throw in another 5000 miles (90/week) for personal use, so
15,000 miles per year.
At 20 mpg that's 750 gallons X $3/gallon = $2250/year or $43/week.
At 15 mpg that's 1000 gallons X $3/gallon = $3000/year or $58/week.

So how are you spending $80/week on gas? At 15 mpg, that's about 21,000 miles/year. At 20 mpg, it's almost 28,000.

I work 20 miles from work also. Use the car anywhere from another 0-75 miles more on the weekends. I'm filling up on average about once/week, getting about 20 mpg. You must be doing some SERIOUS non-work driving!

I put on about 20-25K a year on a car..My SVT Focus I owned had over 80K on the clock when I got rid of it for this car and it wasn't even 4 years old year (got it May 2002)

For example, This week I filled up on Monday morning on the way to work and I had to fill it again Thursday night, at about 250-260 miles. That includes driving to and from work, round trip out to the GF's place Tuesday (another 40-50 miles), stopping over the parents on the way home from work (about an extra 15 miles out of my way then back to my place) once a week then Running some errands...well it all starts to add up. It might not add up to 2x every week, but I'm filling the tank every 3-4 times every 2 week pay period.

PS if your wondering...car payment is $305 and my rough budget for gas would put me at 320 bucks a month for gas.

Yikes! I fill up, typically from about quarter or just below once a week. I live about 11miles from work and do a lot of side driving to and fro and I get on it quite a bit, your gas milage sucks!

Anyone who drives any place in a mustang burns up gas. The mall and back costs me 1/4 a tank per trip. To the GOOD outdoor mall and back uses up about the same, and now my hubby has been driving her 140 miles a day.

There ya go. I hate to say it, but if i was racking up those kinda miles, I probably would've bought something like an Acura TSX that gets close to 30 mpg. At $3.00 a gallon, that would save about $1500 a year. That's not pocket change for someone with 2 kids, a mortgage, grad loan payments, etc.

Let's hope gas prices go down for you soon. Otherwise, maybe move closer to work, or ask the GF to move in with you...okay, scratch that. Just move closer to work.

LOL been talking bout moving in with the GF...plus where she wants to move to would cut my commute down to 10 miles one way

I know what your saying about money...I have everything but the kids and grad school payments, but hey credit cards can be a ***** too :-)

I think everyone in the country (with the exception of the top 10% earners) is feeling the pinch. I live in New Jersey and I can tell you that if you stop to smell a single rose even for a minute, something goes up in price. Whether it's gas, taxes, carrots, watermelon, car washes etc. Everything of course except for my income.

Lets see: Gas for your Mustang @ $80 per week - - - Monthly car payment @ $320 + - - - The self smiles of owning a new generation Mustang... 'Priceless' - - - For everything else there's Mastercard.

well you can put this in the bs folder (35mpg); driving level in 5th gear on cruise control about 60 i am lucky to average 26 mpg - maybe 27 but throw some hills and speed into the equation and it drops. luckily this is my "other car" but then again my mountaineer gets 18mpg so there you go.

I get 21-22 highway, 13-15 town. 16 mile round trip to work 6days a week.
I managed to put 5200 miles on it since April 2005. I drive it every day, just mainly to and from work, few 500 mile round trips to see my parents.
