Since the BOSS 302s were racing heritage cars, built for the Trans Am series. They definitely did not use the biggest engine ford had, but were very successful. Instead, Ford used smaller 302 engines with performance heads and suspension and handling upgrades.

That is exactly what I have been saying for months. However, I think that blower sitting on top is too much added weight! I think the GTR is an insight to the next Boss. The cammer is a nice (light) alternative that still puts out the numbers we are looking for.
Before you start to tell me all about the emissions (or lack thereof) I would tell you that it isn't that hard to put a stock program that runs the engine conservatively in the computer.
To all the naysayers...I wonder how many of you said there was no way the Shelby/Cobra would have the 4-valve S/C 5.4?
To Ford....is anyone listening?

A boss mustang sounds good... maybe with a 428/9 in it too...
That'd be so awesome, but sadly I doubt we'd see a nice big ol' 7 liter engine

As far as the California Special name goes, i think it would be a pretty weird name, especially for customers who don't live in California. could be that ford is just grabbing this name in case, i think companies often trademark a bunch of stuff that they haven't necessarily decided on using, just in case.

If they did have a California Special, it would make sense to me if it was geared towards California and the other states that have adopted the same tight environmental regulations (and just last week, Canada too, yeehaw!). That'd be a perfect name for a hybrid stang, quicker and more fuel efficient than the V6, offered primarily in these special states and Canada. And uhh... Europe? What would europeans think of a name like that?

I hope they have a SE for 2006...it would stink if the lineup has a big gap between the Cobra and GT.

Are you talking about a SE for sometime in 2006 as a 2007 ModelYear (which is when the Cobra is expected)? I don't know if we can get our hopes up for two SEs in the same model year. I suppose that would nice to have, but wouldn't another SE in 2006 take away from the sales of the Cobra? IMO, Ford probably wouldn't offer two SEs the same year.
Perhaps what would be more likely is a SE in 2005 (as a 2006MY). Then again, we probably would have heard of that by now if that were the case.
