SE Mustangs- V6 & GT Upgrades
Just wanted an opinion on the special edition mustangs. We have seen some great mustangs in the last few years with the Bullitt, Mach, Cobra R, 390hp Cobra, and the GT500. The Pony package has stepped up the looks of the new V6. But why is everyone (not just Ford) making the rebirth of the old classics? I understand it sells well, but like the GTO, if its not done right, it flops. With ford's sucess with the new Mustang, Will we see some new SE Mustangs? I would love to see the new Mach 1, don't get me wrong, but will ford ever bring out something thats king of the road and not have to call it a Boss or a Mach 1? Will ford make a "New Legend " In the near future?
I see exactly what you are reffering, and I think it'd be cool to see something all new not related to the past.
I have thought about this before actually, but somehow I think it'd be hard and near impossible to come up with all new never before seen SE's. Hopefully they do someday, and make it sucessful. Long live the classic themes however!

I voted "let's see some new ones" however I really wanted to vote for both.
The classic themes are in harmony with the retrofuturistic styling of the car.
And even though the ideas originated in the '60s, today's cars are not what they were 40 years ago. (Thank goodness they are better. The only exception being cubic inches.) Therefore new SEs that borrow from the past are truly new and unique from the originals. Bringing back the old names quickly brings back to mind the golden age of muscle cars and also reminds us that we are in the dawn of a new golden age of Detroit iron, with the original pony car leading the way.
New SEs that I would like to see are:
Terminator (code name for the 2003-2004 Cobra)
FR500 (a concept car that was never made in production form)
P51 (tribute to the WWII plane that inspired the original Mustang)
Any other ideas for future Mustang SEs?

I would Like to a GT/SC which could stand for SUPERCHARGED ,SPORTCOUPE or whatever . Mainly I would Like something between the Shelby and the Gt. 395 h/p 6speed Stick with a Shaker Hood! I am looking for Drag Performance more than Handling. And lets get some Good Factory Stripes as an Option. And how about some 3.73 Gears Too! heck we just need more Individual options as opposed to all the Packages so we can Taylor our cars better! Geez I could go on and on!

I think this is a real hard one for Ford. The SE's can and probably will keep the Mustang "fresh" and in the news.
I'd like to see a little more distinction between model years than has been done in the recent past. Government testing makes any larger changes pretty unfeasible, but still make grill and tailight changes and possibly even hood changes between model years.
Small power increases when possible.
Interior upgrades as the platform begins to pay for itself.
Continue to refine the car, make IRS a stand alone option on GT's for those who want to pay for it (assuming it's standard on some of the SE's to make this possible from a cost stand point).
I don't know if there's a market for it but research the possiblity of a "coupe" to go along side of the fastback and convertible. Target this for more of a "economy" type car (somewhat like the Sprint or Stallion packages of the past). Engineered for highest possible MPG. Traction control and ABS standard so it's an all weather car.
A BOSS 302 would be the only SE that I'd trade my '05 in on, but it'll have to stay affordable so that Ford can keep the "Best Bang for the Buck" reputation.
I'd have it go like this;
'07 Shelby GT500
'08 Highland green "Bullitt"
'09 Mach I
'10 BOSS 302
(each being a 40 year anniversary edition)
If Ford doesn't build any more RWD cars off this platform they will need to keep the Mustang updated so they don't run into the same situation as with the FOX bodies and let the platform become "ancient".
I think Ford knows the importance of the "Mustang" presently, and for the future, in it's car lineup.

The names are part of the cars' themes and Ford has proven taking from their best and doing it right sells cars. The nostalgia and famous successful models just adds incentives and even more history to the Mustang.
Ford knows the right recipe to keep the flame burning.

I love the classic SE's, but I think Ford needs to make some new legends too. Forty years from now, they can't really recycle the old legends AGAIN. So why not start now and make some new classics? As much as I love the classic themes, I think developing new special editions would give Ford an opportunity to be extra-creative, and maybe come out with some things we would never have thought of.

i would love to see the classics....like any of the bosses...or a gtcs..or another bullitt or mach 1....but i would lvoe to see a totally new mustang... i like the idea of a P51 mustang like AGBULLIT mentioned !!
I never thought about a P-51 SE but that would be interesting to see.
OT--you know that Harley Earl was inspired by the P-38 when he drew the lines for the early 50's Cadillacs at the beginning of the "fins" era.
As for me, I don't need or want anything more powerful than the current Mustang. I've never been to the track and I doubt that I'll ever go. What I want is a Dark Highland Green fastback. It doesn't even have to be a Bullitt, although that would be great. I think I'll get my wish in a couple of years and I can wait that long for it.

I see no need to make new names of SE's. I mean why bother? We already have historic names associated with the Mustang: Mach 1, Boss, Bullitt, California Special, even Sprint.
Other than the Bullitt's dark green what exterior styling cues are really associated with any of those names? California Special and Sprint were limited enough that they could become anything and not too many would even notice or care. Sylistically what really differentiated a Boss from a Mach 1? Mach 1 hveing associated with the shaker hood is only because of the recent cars, and I think old Bosses had shakers.
Essentially I think Ford could do almost whatever they wanted with the names in existence and not have to invent any new names. This car is heavy on retro design cues and any special edition will likely use elements that fit with it and will thus fit the old SE names as well.
There's no need for new names. And as long as any SE's are done with tasteful syle no more will be upset by using those names than there were people upset that the current car looks retro or doesn't look exactly like the concept car.

There are a ton of variations of SEs out there too. That's the best part about looking "retro" is you allow history to find its way back into the car. However, you can easily add new variations to SEs making a whole new SE based off the old ones as well. I see no reason for Ford to have to limit themselves to what they did in the past. :drive:

I think they're doing great with the SE's so far. One could argue the Bullitt is "new" even though it references a 40 year old movie car. :P After all, there's no such thing as a classic Bullitt, just a highland green 68 fastback with trim removed and Torq Thrust D wheels.
That said, I'm anxiously awaiting the Mach & Boss Cars.
If we're talking new SE's, I think an AutoX or Sprint/Comp setup would be great. The V6 is lighter, and has plenty of grunt for tight Autocross courses. Give a V6 the GT (or better) suspension and 17-18" wheels. Add a dual exhhaust, duck tail and chin spoiler and call it done. B)

Well, it looks pretty close between the old and the new. After seeing what people are writing, It appears tat while some like the old, and some like both the old and the new, no one wanted to see the old ones done away with. Thank you! I personally have been very impressed with the SE Mustangs that Ford has done and is doing. Its good to see that some of the SE parts carry over to the GT and V6 (like the Bullitt wheels). Who would have ever thought that they could walk into the local ford dealer and buy a true to life Shelby Mustang again, New. After what the Shelby became one of the most sought after Mustang ever built, it was hard to imagine Ford could, and would do it again. I can’t imagine the feeling of pulling up to an ’07 Mustang that bears the name GT500 across the door and help but think that now is certainly a great time in automobile history. After ford builds a worthy Mach 1, it seemed like it couldn’t get better, but now a GT500? This is sweet! However, with the great success of the S197, Ford could easily write a new page in history with a new SE that would become its own legend and could be re-done in 40 years when people began to think the mustang might be fading away, forgetting the commitment that ford has shown to its loyal fans, of making the Mustang a lifelong symbol of everything that is great about American cars. Thanks all for your input.
