Rust removal methods?

Going to do some rust removal this spring. Axle, DS, control arms, etc.

I'm old school.. wire brush, phosphoric acid, zinc chromate primer, and the color of choice.

Are there new methods out there that work better, faster, less elbow grease?

In the middle of a resto mod on a 71 Charger and my compressor doesn't flow enough for constant air sanding/grinding and my garage is pretty much out of room to stuff a sand blaster in there. So I've been using various size wire/wheel brushes that can be bought at any hardware store hooked up to my old craftsman electric drill. Works great for removing rust and stuff from the old suspension pieces. Finish it up with your favorite brand of chassis paint and it looks brand new.

I bought this at Harbor Freight and attached a wire brush to it. It made rust removal a snap! You will need a decent air compressor to drive it. It's small so getting into places under the car makes it ideal.

Yup, navel jelly is phosphoric acid. Seems to work well but maybe there are better options now.

POR15 over phosphoric etched metal takes a grinder to remove- messiest stuff Ive ever used, but its awesome over steel- just brush it on. And dont try using it over existing paint- its not paint, and only bonds with clean/pitted/rusty steel. if you get it, dont open the can- any humid air that enters will ruin the whole can- I punch 2 holes in the lid and push hardware store tubing in a loop- pull one end out and pour a little into a plastic container to brush from. harbor frieght sells dirt cheep chip brushes that are fine for it- dont even try to save the brushes, get like 50 for $5, toss them out often.

roll on bedliner is great over painted surfaces- etch/prime/scuff paint with scotchbrite, roll/brush it on

+1 on POR15

I used it years ago on a front sub-frame and it worked great... just clean the surface and apply it directly over the rust. The result is a rock hard finish. On my long term "to-do" list for the differential.
