When I shift to neutral and release the clutch, my RPMs rise to 3200-3800.

Anyone else experience this?

You have to take your foot off the gas too!

But seriously, I have never seen that.

This seems common when an intake mod is made. I've read a lot of posts regarding this, and had the same issue for a while when I put the C&L on. It cleared up after about a month.

Just got ud pulleys installed (finally), and oddly enough, this caused the same issue to rear it's head again. Computer re-learning it's idle following mods?

Same problem here but my RPM's dont rise that much. Mine have jumped around the 2,500 rpm range but for some odd reason it doesn't always do that.

Yes I've been looking to see if anyone else had this problem. Mine rises to about 2200rpm. I found that if you go into neutral without down shifting all the way to 1st, this will happen. I found that when I'm getting off the highway and put it into neutral and they go up, by the time I get to the end of the ramp I down shift into first before I stop and this corrects the problem. Still I'm getting it looked at by the dealer. What mods have you made before you noticed this happening? Maybe we can zero in what the problem could be cause by.

The folks at SCT think it's the throttle body. We'll put the stock one back on and see if that fixes it.

From all the reading I've done.. Its normal.. If you hold the clutch in (leave it in neutral) the rpms don't rise.. From what I have read, its the computer trying to help, and you can get that turned off (along with the rpm flare between shifts) with a good flash.

Did you check for the simple things, like a vacuume leak (maybe a hose wasn't re-attached), or perhaps a bad PCV valve. Those are the really simple things I would look for first.

Do some of you actually let a car coast to a stop in neutral with a manual transmission???

I would check that too if it was a 1984 mustang Most likely its something in the computer program/maf readings or something in whatever replaced the old throttle position sensor thats triggering it.

Why not? Traffic signal changes ahead, I know Im gonna stop, and be stopped for a few minutes. dont do this all the time, but on the occasion.
I certainly dont downshift unless I need to, or want the cool growl.

Well, you can downshift into 4th or 3rd and let it coast to walking speed before it wants to stall. Coasting down in neutral makes you a rolling cart, you have no ability to actively move the car on a moment's notice. Its terrible for your brakes as well, its not bad on the clutch unless you downshift to some obnoxious gear all the time. I've always been taught to drive my car to the stop. One of the first things I do teaching someone to drive a manual is to go around a parking lot without touching the gas pedal at all and getting through 1st and 2nd(some cars you can get to 3rd) to get used to low speed driving, and avoids bad habits like slipping the clutch too much and riding the clutch pedal. Put it in first, ease out up to idle speed, and put both feet flat on the floor and drive around a bit. Also makes learing to drive on the road much better and avoids getting the car into bucking fits, as well as overreacting if they do. Funny thing is I try to show someone a car bucking to get them used to it as not a big deal and for the life of me I can't make a car do it anymore

Yes you can drive up to near walking speed in 3rd gear.. But its no better than being in neutral. You step on the gas and all that happens is noise, its not like you will have any power at those low rpms.. But in general, it is better to be in the right gear (which I normally do, its habit from riding a motorcycle also)

While in traffic (e.g. No where to move) and I'm on a slight hill, why bother putting the car in gear to move forward.. I just take my foot off the gas, Once in a while I get to coast like that for a few hundred feet.. By 5mph the rpms are climbing.. One time (while crossing Hoover Dam) I got to drive almost 3 miles like that (5mph, all downhill, 1 lane, no place to go).. But I had to hold the clutch in to keep the rpms from climbing..

I've also on occasion taken it out of gear as I get off the freeway (again, one lane, no place to go) with a stop sign at the end..

Either way, for some reason, ford decided that if the car is in neutral, and you are moving, the car will raise the rpms..

I payed attention to my driving habits the last few times out. I seem to be different on each occasion. Depends on if I know the light is changing soon, there is traffic, im going to make a turn, road conditions. Mostly all subconcious I would say.

Kevin you bring up some good pointers when teaching someone stick. I will use these when I get the nerve up to teach the g/f(Stonetress)

I've noticed that RPMs climbing in my car. I haven't had a chance to do any mods to the engine yet.

I haven't been able to determine the common factor for when it does it, since it's not all the time. But it always always drops to idle as soon as I come to a complete stop.

As for "driving" it to a stop. Yes I couldn't immediately start going should the need arise, but as someone already stated, if you are going walking speed in third gear, you aren't going to go anywhere should the need arise sooner. And I'm sure I can get into first from nuetral faster than I could go from 3rd to 1st or even 2nd to 1st.

I just went for a drive and while I was out I tried coasting to a stop with the car out of gear and the clutch both engaged and disengaged. There is no rise in RPM at all. I even coasted from 60mph down to 5mph one time and it sat right under 1000 RPM the whole time. Car is totally stock under the hood.

I would say that mine only does it about 30% of the time. Maybe less.

True, but wouldn't you feel stupid, if it was just something simple like that you could have fixed yourself in your garage, rather than taking it in to get fixed?

I bring this up, as I had this exact same problem on my 02 GT. There was a crack in a vacuum hose, which I fixed with a utility knife, and 3 minutes labour.
